Product Description

Capacity: 120 GB

The S510 is a highly cost-effective option for SSD upgrades of existing systems, and for new SATA 6Gb/s enabled computers. The S510 utilizes the new generation Sand Force SF-2200 series controller, with native support for the SATA 6Gb/s platform. In both desktop and notebook computers, users will enjoy an unprecedented high-speed experience. The S510 can reach 550/510MB read and write speeds respectively, with 4K random write speeds as high as 85,000 IOPS. Solid state drives require no defragmentation, and support the Windows TRIM command. The S510 provides vibration-free running and low power consumption, while taking full advantage of the 6Gb bandwidth transmission capability. All purchasers of the S510 can download the free Disk Migration Utility software. It facilitates the quick transfer of all files to the new solid state drive, significantly reducing the troublesome and time-consuming process of reinstalling software and restoring data from backups.

The drive has worked flawlessly thus far.

If you're smart when installing your OS and set it up to use a different drive for the defaults when installing programs and User files the drive is plenty big enough!

ADATA claims they'll respond within a day, but I have received no response from ADATA.

I got this SSD to replace a slow and ancient hard drive in my laptop (circa 2008). The SSD vastly improves performance, delivering a whopping 60x/40x 4K random read/write over the old HDD in my tests (pic attached on the product page under "customer images"). It is much lighter and more durable than the old HDD, it is resistant to shock, and it doesn't cause noise or vibrations, unlike the regular hard drive. I have had nothing but good experience with ADATA products (RAM, memory cards, flash drives) so I'm fairly confident the drive will last.

A couple minor quibbles though:
1. Upon installing the drive, I've noticed the battery life drop from 5hrs 30min to 5hrs flat. At first I thought it was merely due to active garbage collection the drive was performing after a fresh OS install but after the issue persisted for a few days, I decided to test it by putting the old hard drive back in (I've left its contents untouched) and the battery life went back up to 5hrs 30min. After searching online, I found that this drive pulls ~0.7W idle and ~1.5W active, which is actually slightly more than a regular 2.5" hard drive (~0.2W sleep/standby, ~0.5W idle and 1.4W active) hence the reduced battery life. This is by no means a deal breaker since increased speed/durability more than makes up for it. Also, this shouldn't be a problem for desktop users.
2. The area of the notebook enclosure right under the drive (away from the processor/fan exhaust) gets noticeably hot, to the point of being uncomfortable to use on your lap for extended periods of time. Once again, not a huge issue or a deal breaker for me as I mainly put the laptop on a desk. This also should be a non-issue for desktop users.

I use these in conjunction with a Foxconn NT-535 unit for single-use appliances (Linux PBX, Windows 7 terminals, etc). My use cases don't require very much storage. So, for the price range I prefer to use faster units without moving parts over larger laptop drives. I have bought at least 40 of these over the past few years and have been very happy with their performance. I've yet to receive a bad drive from any distributor (Usually Amazon or Newegg). The unit comes with mounting screws and a 3.5" mounting tray. Definitely a great product.

I bought 2 of these for $70 each and let me tell you, they were well worth every penny. Windows 7 starts up in no time, maybe 20 seconds after the RAID post. And by boot uup I mean instantly ready to use. No delay in program readiness. The RAID scores a 7.9 on the experience index absolutely destroying my Core i5 at 7.4 (I have a 2300 at stock). In synthetic benchmarks I am pulling a little over 1Gb/s read and a little under write. Load times for games like Mass Effect 3 are non existent. I remember when I could go to the bathroom and come back before being able to play; not any more! I would highly reccomend these drives.

The quick review: I've been using this particular brand and size of SSD in several machines now (desktops & laptops) and have seen excellent performance and not one failure. I was previously using the OCZ Agility's in the same size and the performance was good, but failure plagued many of them (just read the reviews on Amazon). The wasted time was not worth the $20 I saved with a cheaper drive.

Awhile ago I bought an ADATA 3.0 flash drive that introduced me to the brand, so I gave their SSDs a try. I'm glad I did. I've also tried some DDR3 RAM with great results too. Brand loyalty is not something I get into, but ADATA has a perfect track record in my book, so I'll continue to buy their products and recommend it to everyone.

EDIT: One more thing I forgot to mention; the first SSDs I ordered came with the drive only, but the last one I received came with a 2.5" to 3.5" mounting adapter. It's solid metal and matches the color of the blue label on the drive with the ADATA logo in white. It's actually quite beautiful for such a simple thing. Just one more reason why I appreciate this brand.

I figure that there are two inexpensive ways to speed up your slightly aging PC without having to build or buy a new one. The fastest, cheapest and easiest way is to DOUBLE or QUADRUPLE your RAM capacity; go from four gigs to eight gigs, or two gigs to four, or two to eight, whatever suits your needs and budget.

The other, and more complicated way, is to swap out your HDD and install a SSD. I say more complicated because it involves re-installing your OS; you have to back up your data and go through the whole time-consuming process of downloading/reloading your old software apps, with fingers crossed sometimes.

BUT IT IS WORTH IT.

I installed this 64 GB SSD from ADATA on a three year old PC running Windows 7 PRO 64 BIT. Now, it's pretty much the fastest loading and running PC in the house, faster than my new PC I built using an older 750 GB HDD from Western Digital. The Windows Index number for hard drive performance went from 5.9 (old HDD) to 7.2 (new SSD, 7.9 MAX). That's a pretty big jump in performance, and I can tell the difference when using the PC.

Some quick things to note: Included in the contents is bracket that allows you to install the SSD in a regular-sized HDD slot, but not included is a SATA cable, so make sure you that have one on hand. Also, the body of the SSD is a brushed aluminum case that looks to be of high quality; it looks really good. Too bad it's hidden inside the PC.

Finally, Windows 7 Pro 64 BIT OS (and all the internet updates from Windows) and a few downloaded apps like Chrome and iTUNES takes up 26GB of space out of 60GB total that are available. Just under half, in other words. And that's what I was aiming for; keeping half the space open for adding things in the future.
