Parent friendly, excellent parenting guidelines,
By A Customer
This review is from: The ADD/ADHD Checklist (Paperback)
I picked up this book in order to research ADD/ADHD in response to my child's teachers suggestions that he may be such a child. This book is written in such clear terms that it de-mystifies this all enveloping area. It contains simple to follow checklists. But it's best feature for parents are the numerous suggestions for supporting your child at home and at school. I felt enpowered by it to gain help for my child who is possibly borderline ADD, but to me seems like a regular boy who does not like putting much effort into school work and resents homework. The label ADD is frightening, but by no means suggests that your child should be medicated. This book supported my search for alternatives.

The ADD/ADHD Checklist,

This review is from: The ADD/ADHD Checklist (Paperback)
This is an excellent, reader-friendly guide to ADD/ADHD. It is useful for parents and teachers alike, an it allows the reader to get answers to their questions quickly by simply looking through the detailed subject index to their specific issue. Topics like medication alternatives, specific approaches for parents, educational guidelines, and teaching strategies are but a few of the topics covered in this book. As an educator with experience dealing with ADHD children, I highly recommend this book.

This review is from: The ADD/ADHD Checklist (Paperback)
This book is a very good "first book" to start with if you are researching how to help your child. It is written in simple terms that parents can understand. It gives helpful tips on setting up your child's environment in order to help them be more successful. I have read many books on this subject, and this is a staple book for any parent of a child with ADD/ADHD.

This is the best book on ADD/ADHD I have read,
By Enid "Book worm" (Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The ADD/ADHD Checklist (Paperback)
I have purchased many books on ADD/ADHD, and have found this one to be the best! The rest of the books on ADD have all found their way to the tip or to fete bookstores over the years. This book provides both practical and detailed advice for parents in the form of useful checklists. Other books on this subject matter tend to be too fatalistic and theoretical. This is pro-active and practical!
I thoroughly recommend this book.

I have a 5 year old son who was just diagnosed with ADHD. We bought several books on the subject but I thought this was the best. It is straightforward, easy to read, well organized and full of many useful facts. It has really helped us understand the disease better. We have been able to make some positive changes both at school and home. I would definitely recommend this book.

The checklist format of the book (really more like bullet points) makes it easy to locate and absorb the information you are looking for. Once you've read the book, the format is great for future look-ups.Right off the bat, the book jumps into the nebulous nature of ADD/ADHD. These particular symptoms may be correlated with ADD/ADHD... or it may just be within the spectrum of normal kid behavior. ADD/ADHD is a multifaceted neurological problem, so while parents, teachers, guidance counselors, and daycare workers may suspect a child has the condition, only really good medical testing, psychological testing, coordination with the school, and family counseling can accurately diagnose the condition. Having that spelled out early in the book is welcome information. Section 1, List 11) You get a little freaked out reading this book... because *every* kid is like this. They are, by nature, childish. Impulsive, inappropriate, wiggly... poor concentration, inconsistent, daydreaming. And we grown-ups get this under control, but in times of stress, you see all the same childish behaviors coming out of adults, too. So when a parent is frustrated by their children's "childishness," it is appropriate to remember that they are only children. Still, there is a difference between "childishness" and Add/ADHD. This book assumes that you have (or are working toward) a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD and lists all kinds of information, categorically. Information for parents, for teachers, and for ideas to try. It's good information for any parent because... well, children are childish. I'm not a teacher (apart from Sunday school), but there was good information in there for parents. I thought the most helpful sections were on positive incentives and reinforcers for home (Section 2, list 25), Giving Directions -- Tips for Parents (Section 2, list 28), and Getting Student's Attention (Section 3, list 40). Any parent can benefit from adding more structure to the home, creating a sense of excitement, and being positive and encouraging. The book was written in 1998. I would be interested in learning what developments have taken place in the past decade, for example, with rates of diagnosis and academic outcomes for children diagnosed in the 80s and 90s.
