Book Description

September 24, 2003
The ADHD label had been rampantly overused on children with completely different problems when the controversial first edition of ADHD was praised by practitioners and parents alike as a timely book whose message was long overdue. This new edition includes a complete revision of the chapter on medication, detailing when to use certain drugs and the side effects that can be expected, and including a thorough review and update of older medications. Special problems for teenagers with ADHD are addressed, including sexual relationships, pregnancy, substance abuse, driving, and general teen attitudes. Material has been added to help parents find their way through the legal maze of public education where children are often wrongly first stigmatized with the ADHD label.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Pediatrician Haber, who works regularly with developmental and behavioral problems, stresses realism and careful attention to facts when dealing with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), for ADHD is championed by a large and diverse band in which "entrepreneurism frequently overcomes logic." Elementary and high-school teachers, as well as school administrators, often urge parents to take a child to their physician for a prescription for Ritalin or another of the other putative ADHD drugs. Note that the parents are told to get a prescription, not to find out what, if anything, is wrong. Occasionally, Ritalin or another drug can play a role in treatment, but only after careful study has shown that the child's problem will probably be best served by it. Even then, Ritalin should be used for a relatively brief period only. Many cases are misdiagnosed, and unfortunately, some major disorders whose symptoms mimic those of ADHD grow very malign if not identified in time. Haber explodes myths, relays much scientific information, and makes many practical suggestions. William Beatty

Review

Every parent and every teacher will need personal copies they can dog-ear and highlight. (Margaret Carr, M.Ed. )

Haber advises parents to be cautious and patient and clearly explains other problems that have similiar symptoms. He also explores drug companies' marketing campaigns that he believes led to so many misdiagnoses. Most importantly, Haber explains the different treatments available and suggests ways to find a good clinician. (Pam Lilley Cleveland Plain Dealer )

This book is a comprehensive, avuncular, discussion of the incresing frequency with which children are diagnosed or misdiagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The information is solid and potentially very helpful. (Infodad.Com )

Haber explodes myths, relays much scientific information, and makes many practical suggestions. (Booklist )

4.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Informative Source for Parents Needing Answers!, August 30, 2000
By A Customer
I have read ADHD: The Great Misdiagnosis and feel it is a VERY Informative book for Parents beginning the diagnostic process of having their child evaluated for ADHD, and even for parents of children who have already been diagnosed. I suspect this book will be one of the best books on the market soon! After reading this, I have become a much more informed parent and a better advocate for my child.

It is UNBELIEVEABLE how little parents, teachers, and physicians know about the ADHD disorder. I believe many problems related to ADHD happen because the public is not educated enough about ADHD, and because of this, we seem to have a big outbreak of ADHD today. Many problems with ADHD center around the fact that there are also MANY descrepancies in how children are being tested, and even who thinks these children are ADHD. Many physicians aren't trained to look at other symptoms that mimick ADHD, and end up often misdiagnosing our children, or prescribing medications that they didn't need in the first place. Teachers are not professionals in diagnosing these types of problems either!

I know of many instances where parents have taken school information to a General Pediatrician, and walked out in 15 minutes with a prescription for Ritalin, without their child ever being appropriately tested. THIS IS SO MISFORTUNATE!!!

Dr. Haber has included some very important material in this book about ADHD - What it is, and What it isn't, how the many different medications and treatments work - or don't work, and most importantly WHY OUR CHILDREN ARE BEING OVERDIAGNOSED AND LABELED ADHD. Knowing what symptoms look like ADHD but aren't is SO important.

I am glad to have found a source of information like this.

Controversial and thought provoking, Dr. Haber has challenged my long-held beliefs on ADHD and forced me re-examine the conventional wisdom. A very important book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Important Book, September 9, 2000
By
Robert W. Wynne (Santa Monica, CA United States) - See all my reviews
I wish every doctor in America who treats children could read this book. Dr. Haber battles conventional wisdom and comes out on top. The over-prescribing of drugs and faulty diagnosis of ADHD has turned into a national epidemic. "The Great Misdiagnosis" makes an urgent call for rationality.
