From the Author

For twenty-five years, I have worked as a school psychologist with children with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder- without Hyperactivity). For years there was denial by school personnel and parents that such a medical conditon existed. Today, there are those who are educated to understand ADHD. However, some people still think that students with ADHD are purely a product of poor parenting, and that students with ADD are simply lazy. I am not saying that there aren't students who have a combination of ADHD, poor parenting, inappropriate educational settings, and are lazy. The good news is that more and more parents and school personnel are being educated about ADHD.

The following pages are ideas on how to create modifications in the classroom and on the playground or campus for students with ADHD. Each category of behaviors in need of modifications will begin with a rationale and then sample modifications. These are samples which I have personally used with success. Remember, each modification needs to meet the needs of that individual student. Mold it to fit the student's needs. You are creating an individualized plan, much like custom clothing. One size does not fit all, just as one particular modification plan wil not fit the needs of all students with ADHD. I am writing this book for teachers and parents who want to help their students by making modifications in the school setting. My two stongest recommendations throughout this book are that school, parents and students work together as a consistent unit for the student and this unit be creative. NOW, LET'S GET CREATIVE TOGETHER!

I found this book to be to the point. As a teacher and a mother of a child with ADHD, I found excellent ideas to try with my child and at school. I liked to brevity of this book. I did not have to read pages to obtain some simple, but fantastic ideas to use with our ADHD kids.

This book took the typical behaviors of ADHD kids, broke them down, and made separate and specific recommendations. They are very realistic and applicable in the general classroom. I recommend it for general ed. and special ed. teachers alike.
