Review

Dr. Newmark has finally crafted the book that I have long been wishing for: a wonderful self-help guide for parents looking for a thoughtful and sciencebased natural approach to treating ADHD. This integrative/holistic style reduces or eliminates the need for stimulant medications and offers sound advice about diet, sleep, nutrients, herbs and other key modalities. The book radiates a balanced wisdom that comes so rarely from practicing physicians today. --Scott Shannon, MD, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist; author of Please Don t Label My Child; editor of Handbook of Complementary and Alternative Therapies in Mental Health

If I had one book to read about ADHD, this is it. It is well-written, practical and filled with the uncommonly good common sense of an experienced and compassionate clinician with fair-minded and rigorous reviews of the state of the science. --Kathi Kemper, MD, MPH; Director, Center for Integrative Medicine; Professor of Pediatrics, Social Science Health Policy, and Family and Community Medicine, Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center

Parents are keenly interested in finding non-drug, holistic strategies that support their child s natural healing systems and that help build healthy brains. This excellent new book artfully blends the best of conventional and complementary options for kids with ADHD. Over years of clinical practice and scientific study, Dr.Newmark has developed a balanced, safe, natural approach that I will wholeheartedly recommend for all of my patients with ADHD. Buying this book is a no-brainer if you are concerned with ADHD. I only want to add that Dr. Newmark gave a 56-minute talk entitled "An Integrative Approach to ADHD" at the University of California. You can google it; it's available on at uctv. tv and on Youtube. I suggest you watch it while waiting for your book to come. He knows what he is talking about--see for yourself.

As a long-time educator and school counselor, my heart breaks each time a young child's diagnosis of ADHD is addressed with chemicals as the first protocol, altering the young developing brain with drugs. Dr. Sandy Newmark's carefully researched and documented new book supports alternatives to drugging our intensely, delightful youth, giving parents and educators tools to tackle real issues of focus and the under-developed executive functioning. This book is exactly the resource I have needed to combat the ever-growing demand made by well-intentioned parents, physicians, educators when they query, "Have you considered putting him/her on medication?" Rather, have you considered ADHD Without Drugs? Bringing out the best version of our children without drugs - who doesn't want that?

As a parent and therapist I am constantly looking for common sense, holistically based resources. It has been impossible to find unbiased, holistic, and accurate information from the medical community-until now. Dr. Newmark provides parents with accurate information that is untainted by the pharmecutical companies. He provides real tools for navigating an ADHD diagnosis and dispells common myths and fallacies about how to treat it. His book brings hope to all parents facing this challenge in a practical and supportive way. Thank you Dr. Newmark, for changing everything about the way we view ADHD!

I like that the author is an MD. He uses research as the basis for his recommendations. His approach is a common-sense one. First, work on nutrition; eliminate foods with artificial colors, artificial flavors, and artificial preservatives as much as possible. A research study in the Lancet journal concluded that artificial colors (dyes) make ALL children hyperactive; England forbids the use of certain artificial colors in foods, however, the USA has not taken similar action.

Omega 3s have been proven to help kids with ADHD.

Check your child's serum ferritin levels (CBC-serum ferritin test) and zinc levels to see if supplementation is needed. Use magnesium-rich foods and possible supplementation.

For sleep issues, melatonin and valerian is recommended.

The best insight was to try common-sense methods first. If your child shows improvement, great. If these methods fail, then ADHD medications are prescribed.

additudemagazine.com is a great website with information about ADHD. Dr. Newmark has 2 webinars, to which you can listen for more information.

As a counseling psychologist with 15 years experience,I have encountered numerous clients whose families have been impacted by children diagnosed with ADHD.In the past, these clients have not had any access to information other than that which was provided by the standard "medical model" treatment. That treatment strategy was always based in psychostimulant medication.NOW THERE ARE ALTERNATIVES!!!!!! Dr. Newmark opens the doors to a new and dynamic approach with easy to understand practical information backed by the most current scientific data that both acknowledges and honors the complexity of each individual situation.ADHD Without Drugs represents an incredibly useful and welcome additon to aid both parents and professionals.Thank you Dr.Newmark

"Dr. Sandy Newmark is a visionary, ethical and compassionate pediatrician whom is taking his expertise to STOP the INSANITY occurring with our children, adolescents and even adults! It is with great disappointment and frustration that a majority of physicians reach for their Rx pads BEFORE even considering a holistic approach. I could only wish they were in homes and classrooms when we are observing the deleterious side effects that create chaos and broken spirits along the way. I can attest to the atrocities that are associated with medication cocktails and what is perceived as guinea pig like experimentation through my leadership in our in-home program. Dr. Newmark is a great humanitarian to use his wisdom, skill and power in such a magnanimous way to make much needed change in the field of pediatrics and psychiatry. More importantly in the lives of the people we serve! Dr. Newmark is to medicine what Marty Seligman is to Positive Psychology igniting the change we need! "

My 9 year old son was just diagnosed with ADHD inattentive type. This book has been so helpful. From the brain chemistry to how to deal with teachers and schools to the different types of medications, he covers it all. He is also so encouraging. He really helps me focus on my son's gifts rather than his learning challenges. It's a must read!
