5.0 out of 5 stars Great stories from the Golden Age of Radio
This is the first of a series of boxed sets featuring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson. I found the whole series highly entertaining. Simon & Schuster really put a lot of effort into this collection. To begin with they rounded up some of the people, announcers, actors/actresses, writers and the spouses of the writers & producers of the series and put together a nice little prelude and postlude for each show. These preludes and postludes provide quite a bit of background info on the show, performers and production staff.

The shows themselves move very quickly and are suspenseful. I love to listen to the shows while traveling in the car or just sitting at home with the lights down. Listed below are my descriptions of the shows in this collection.

TAPE ONE:

THE UNFORTUNATE TOBACCONIST - Everytime a new owner purchases a tobacco shop located on the waterfront he is killed. Holmes & Watson have to figure out who is doing the killing before the new owner and his daughter are killed.

THE PARADOL CHAMBER - Has the 4th dimension really been discovered? Is teleportation possible? Holmes & Watson look into the matter. Mrs. Watson makes an important cameo.

TAPE TWO:

THE VIENNESE STRANGLER - Why are the other tennants at Holmes's Baker St. residence being murdered? Will he be next?

THE NOTORIOUS CANARY TRAINER - While on vacation Holmes & Watson come across an old enemy. During an attempt to flee he is killed. Was it suicide or murder?

TAPE THREE:

THE APRIL FOOL'S DAY ADVENTURE - Watson sets Holmes up for an April Fools day joke. However the joke is the prelude to a jewel theft. Holmes also meets Moriarty for the first time.

THE STRANGE ADVENTURE OF THE UNEASY EASY CHAIR - Why do people die when sitting in this Easy Chair?

TAPE FOUR:

THE STRANGE CASE OF THE DEMON BARBER - An actor believes he is performing murders while he is asleep. Just like the character he portrays in his current play. He hires Holmes to prove he is guilty.

THE MYSTERY OF THE HEADLESS MONK - Holmes & Watson team with a well known occult expert to investigate a ghost story.
