I always enjoyed this back in the vinyl days and was happy to see that AFL1-3603 had been released on CD. As the double disc release "Unfinished Business" stated in the liner notes, it was difficult to choose which songs to include from the "barcode album" because they were all great. This album showed that it was not only Ray that was born with talent in the Davies family, but Dave also received a healthy dose. He played all of the instruments on almost every song as well as the vocals, writing and producing the music on the album. From rockers like "Nothin' More To Lose" to ballad type songs like "Visionary Dreamer", his songwriting talent shines brightly. His jab at Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders in "Move Over" is always worth a chuckle making me compare the influence that she had over Ray at the time to that of Yoko over John Lennon.
All in all this is CD shows that Dave stands out as one of the most talented musicians that was ever produced from the British Invasion. It is a must for any Kinks fan's music collection.

Dave Davies' solo debut was long overdue in 1980, and he didn't hold anything back. The heavy guitars and drums come blaring out of the speakers from the first track, "Where Do You Come From". Dave's singing at the top of his range, and the guitars are on '11'. That sets the tone for most of this set. "We're so proud of our intellect, arrogant selfish fools, who can look no further than a bunch of separative rules / well if we're all so clever and technology rules, why is it we're so scared? I've got a rockin' psychosis and my jukebox's blown a fuse". Powerful stuff from "Nothin' More to Lose". The targets are generally political, social and religious leaders who all claim "they're Doing the Best For You" - ha ha, yeah, right. But it's not a negative album. There's positive visions in "The World is Changing Hands", "In You I Believe", and gentler tracks like the melodic "Run" and the almost power popish "Imaginations Real". Dave plays all the instruments on all but 4 tracks, and proves a very capable rhythm section for his own guitar leads. And the guitars! Sometimes there are multiple layers of them, just bursting out of the speakers. Dave put a lot of hard work and a lot of love into this album. Thanks, Koch, for putting this masterwork on cd.

Whoever thought that Dave Davies was "just the guitar player" in The Kinks, is wrong. He is not only a great guitar player, but as The Who s' John Entwistle was, a consumate multi instrumentalist and musician. All songs have something to stand for specially "Imaginations Real", this is the best song and could have been a big hit if released as a single.

His second solo album, "Glamour" includes a superb song called "Bodies", extraordinary and also the third solo, a song called Cold Winter" Both songs should be classics !!
