This review is from: AFX Long Beach Grand Prix Set AFX9949 (Toy)
Bought this for the kids last Christmas, and here it is August and is still working fine. I had tons of experience with HO scale racecar sets as a child, and my expectations for this sets functionality are met. The kids now take it apart and put it together without dad doing anything but supervising. When the kids set up the track each time, they expect that you have to lay down some laps, adjust the track pieces for good contact and re-cleaned the cars. We never put together the grandstands because dad was not motivated to fold cardboard. Lots of extras can be bought throughout the life cycle of the toy. Plenty of track for the size of our home, and going to 4 lanes would by possible with 50 feet of 2 lane track available (you need to purchase power supplies and powered track pieces).
The cars are holding up as well, and are as fast out-of-the-box as dads HO cars were back in the day after swapping gear sets, tires, carving plastic, and adding clay to corners. We have yet to use the extra set of pickups that come with the kit for either car. Bought a set of crossover tracks to solve the outside lane advantage during racing with 2 lanes. Controllers work well once the children have practiced a little. One straight piece of track has a bit of plastic broken off but still functions perfectly. The plastic was broken off when my 5-year-old took apart two track pieces by bending them off instead of pulling them straight apart. Another straight piece of track has a couple spots where the shiny coating has come off one of the rails. But, again it works perfectly. I have never replaced the little rectangle (+/- 1inchx2inch) of 400 or 800 wet and dry (sandpaper) that comes with the kit. We exclusively use erasers up to this point. It should be noted that we cleaned every contact and track piece before assembling the 1st time with the included sandpaper, erasers, and some clean rag material with alcohol. A great next step after Thomas Tank engine.
