Like most people who buy a sub-$100 tablet, I was mostly attracted by the price. (So what if it's not great? I'm only out $100.) I've had the AGPtek 9-inch Android 4.0 tablet PC for about a week. First I found that the "user guide" in the box was worse than useless. It was poorly printed on pages of tissue-thin paper about 2x3 inches and contained many screenshots that were totally black. The downloaded version had legible pictures but was generally of not much help. It even contained inconsistent advice, such as admonishing the user to use the USB connection only for the transmission of data, but then on another page pointing out that it could be used for faster recharging (than the ac adapter). For the uninitiated Android user, a brief introduction to Android software might have been helpful, or at least a link to an Android tutorial. The worst problem I encountered was the tablet's poor wi-fi performance. The tablet consistently indicated that the signal from my home wi-fi network was "weak," and sometimes too weak for the tablet to download anything. This is in spite of the perfectly normal performance of my aging LG telephone, my also aging netbook computer, and my even more remotely located Roku box under the TV. The only way I could get the tablet to operate through a wi-fi connection was to position myself about three feet from the wireless router, and even then the AGPtek would only show one or two arc-shaped bars, still indicating a very weak signal. In contrast, a signal strength app I have installed on my phone shows a "moderate" to "good" signal strength throughout the house. I can only conclude that the wireless transmitter/receiver function of the tablet is defective in either its design or its manufacture.Read more ›
