Grade 9 Up-This comprehensive overview pulls no punches. Eight chapters provide detailed information about the history of the disease; current methods for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention; and the global public-health impacts. Numerous personal profiles effectively illustrate various aspects of the disease and both patients' and societal reactions to it. The writing is crisp and professional. Occasional cartoons and other humorous touches ("If your partner doesn't have a condom, you just have to take a deep breath and go get one") help temper the presentation and keep readers from becoming mired in statistics and grim prognoses. Black-and-white photos, diagrams, and graphs add clarity and impact, and frequent text boxes punctuate the often-complex wording with interesting highlights. Appendixes include a three-page question-and-answer section and a detailed chronology of the disease beginning with the first confirmed death in 1969 through 1998.
