Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 8 Up-- Now in the fourth edition, Hyde and Forsyth's standard work resembles previous versions. Material has been rearranged, revised, and expanded, but the well-researched straightforward text retains the same emphasis and tone. An introductory chapter entitled ``AIDS: The Second Decade'' describes Magic Johnson's recent contributions to AIDS awareness, and gives an overview of the disease that includes modes of transmission and current high-risk groups. Subsequent sections cover prevention, treatment, living with AIDS, caring for people with it, and coping with feelings toward infected individuals. Relating the modern disease to other devastating plagues, the authors have retained excellent historical material that will be useful to report writers. A glossary and brief list of other information sources are given. Equally factual and also recently revised, Alvin and Virginia Silverstein's AIDS (Enslow, 1991) has a similar scope. Libraries may want to have both books, as there is some unique material in each and an endless demand for readable YA material on this topic. --Sue A.
