From the Manufacturer

Sixty Years of Quality Sound, Sixty Years of AKG Expertise

For more than 60 years, AKG microphones and headsets have been synonymous with professional audio excellence. Since it was founded in 1947, AKG has been passionately delivering superior-sounding, cutting-edge products. Within months of the company’s founding, its microphones were being used by radio stations, theaters and jazz clubs. A mere two years later, AKG headphones were introduced to the marketplace.

AKG products quickly established a reputation for superior performance, and many musical artists started relying on them when it came to performing and recording. World-renowned artists used AKG products back in the 50s, while many of today’s most recognized artists swear by AKG products for live concerts and studio recording.

More than 60 years and 1500 patents later, AKG continues to create innovative and exceptional-sounding products for both professional and personal use. So it stands to reason that the AKG K272 high definition over-ear headphones deliver outstanding performance, unparalleled comfort and unmatched reliability. Choose the brand that the pros have chosen for so many years. Hook up your iPod, or connect your stereo or nearly any other audio device to the AKG K 272 high-definition over-ear headphones and enjoy the ultimate listening experience.

Patented Varimotion technology delivers remarkably crisp, clean signal

Your Personal Partner--For Professional Results

Comfortable and Durable

The AKG K 272 high-definition over-ear headphones represent the best in comfort and performance. Long listening sessions demand extremely comfortable headphones, and the K 272 HDs are the best choice for audiophiles when it comes to comfort. Their luxurious, self-adjusting headband conforms to your head, while their gimbal suspension allows the headphones to sit against your ears without pinching. And, of course, the replaceable velvet-soft ear pads cushion your ears. The K 272 HDs are rugged as well as comfortable, making them the ultimate choice for DJs. The AKG K 272 HD headphones will connect to virtually any portable audio device, including an older iPhone.

Ultra-soft ear pads and self-adjusting headband make wearing these a dream

Take a Step Up from the Ordinary

For today’s high-definition audio sources, only the best headphones will do. The K 272 HDs are the supreme step up from other high-performance over-ear headphones, delivering the best in high-output sound and frequency response from virtually any portable device, including the iPhone. They feature a closed-back design with high-end drivers that deliver supreme frequency response, with low frequencies reproduced all the way down to 16 Hz and high frequencies reproduced with dazzling clarity out past 28 kHz. They reproduce this frequency response with the best detail and dynamic range that the AKG brand has to offer. They’re also designed for high output with minimum distortion making them the ultimate upgrade for DJs or audiophiles who listen in mobile environments. You get all of the sound and none of the noise.

High Quality Materials Create High Definition Sound

Extra-large speakers with Varimotion diaphragms provide higher sensitivity and a wider dynamic range. Varimotion is the first technique that allows the production of a microphone diaphragm whose thickness varies along its diameter. This provides better control of the capsule resonance, reducing the need for expensive mechanical tuning resonators in the shaft to a minimum. Varimotion diaphragms can vibrate freely, providing a much crisper, cleaner sound than conventional designs.

For the finest possible transmission of their wide frequency response, the K 272 HDs use a single-sided, 99%-oxygen-free cable. The hard gold-plated jack plug and contacts resist corrosion and enhance sound clarity.

Reliable Compatibility

You can use the K 272 HDs with your home stereo, portable DVD, CD and MP3 players and many other audio/video players. With their slim, tapered connector, the K272 HDs are compatible with all versions of the iPhone including first generation mode They’re an ideal upgrade to any portable device.

I just received my k272 hd's in the mail and was pretty overwhelmed by how large they are. I tried them on without sound and they are fairly comfortable although my Sony MDR-NC60's are definitely more comfortable than the 272's. To be specific, the headband on the 272's is really great and fits nicely on my head (although this is just after 30 min or so on my head so I might have to update this review). The ear pads are above average, but like I said not the best I have tried. As for the design and style of the headphones, they are massive. I obviously wasn't expecting them to be that compact but I am seriously considering getting another pair of headphones to wear when I am on the go. Now for the sound. First song I listened to was Strobe by Deadmau5. I was very impressed by the highs! The lows and bass are good too, not overpowering like the Beats. I think the bass could be slightly more punchy. The high's seem to overshadow the rest a little bit but just barely. Overall, very good sound (I am very picky). As for the isolation: great. I took my iPhone and played it on the max about 1.5 feet away from my face and I could not hear a thing when the headphones were at 35% volume when connected to the computer without an amp.
The other headphones that I considered when buying these cans are Ultrasone 780's and Beyerdynamic dt770's. I think I made the best purchase since I got these headphones for 200$.
Sound: 4.5/5
Comfort: 4.5/5
Looks: 4/5
Isolation: 5/5
Value: 4.5/5 @ $200
Overall: 4.5/5
(rounded up to a 5/5 on Amazon)

UPDATE:
WOW. Listening for long periods at a time is very comfortable and the sound just gets better. 5/5, up from 4.5/5. I have also gotten used to their size and have gotten to like them more over time. Listening at high volumes is also doable: listening fatigue is not a concern with these cans.
Again, great purchase.

Absolutely awesome pair of cans. I recently got a Panasonic portable blu ray player and was in need of set of headphones to make the sound as crisp as the picture. The search ended with these. Absolutely awesome definition and clarity. The bass is outstanding on these, tight and thumpy without being overwhelming like some headphones I've owned. I was so excited when I got them that I broke out the vinyl and plugged them into my Onkyo 905. Needless to say I was in sonic heaven. I'm sure you will be too when you give these a try.

This is my first headphone review and I'm only 16, so please don't critique my technical terms haha. So I received these headphones for christmas last year and they are holding up really well. The headphones I had before these were noise cancelling Sony MDR-NC60's and I thought those were awesome, but I was about to learn how bad noise cancelling headphones are compared to higher end stuff such as these. I can only say good things about these headphones...

COMFORT:
When you put these headphones on you will not say to yourself, "Wow these are extremely comfortable". But that is a good thing considering my Sony's seemed really comfortable when you first put them on, but after 30 minutes they started to hurt the top of my head where the headband rested. AKG's self-adjusting headband is one of my favorite features of this headphone because you know you will have the same fit everytime you place these on your dome. With the AKG's, they remain unnoticable for hours. This statement remains true even after I sat in the car for 16 hours. I probably only had them off for like 3 out of the 16 hours. I think that example proves that the 272's design is pretty flawless when it comes to comfort and fit. I will have to say that they are pretty huge, so you may get a few stares while wearing them in public, but I doubt they were designed to be low profile in the first place. Oh and absolutely no fatigue while wearing these at high volumes for extended periods of time.

DURABILITY:
I have to say that these things are pretty bombproof. They feel very solid without weighing 5 pounds. I've had these for almost 9 months and I don't have a scratch on them.

I've had these headphones for about 2 years now. They sit at my desk and get put on and off every day, they don't move around much.

They are extremely comfortable and the sound is fantastic. I can't recommend them though due to their fragility. both ear caps which protect the solder joints between the speakers have cracked. The plastic housing which has threading features for a screw has cracked on both sides. I had to resolder and repair the right side of the headphones, and the left side is starting to fall apart as well.

These are the most amazing headphones I have ever heard. They absolutely fit the iphone and sound magnificent. The only criticism is that they expose poor downloads. You can hear everything and if the quality of the download you are listening to is low quality thats what you hear. I recently listened to a high quality download of a certain symphony and you can literally hear the musicians pushing foot pedals and adjusting strings. Amazing.

They have the old school look. Very Soft velvet around the ears for comfortable long continuous listening. These HD Headphones have Superb range, and if anyone says otherwise it's their equalizer. Hooked these up to my Marantz receiver while listening to vinyl, it's as good as it gets! The louder I put the volume on my receiver, the clearer the sound! If you have the money to spend on these, or you're hardcore about good sound, look no further.

Note: I did not purchase these through Amazon, but through Harman directly.
