I own two pairs of AKG K240's, which are a standard studio headphone. They sound fantastic. I bought this pair for recording vocals, because the 240's are semi-open and I don't want bleed through.
The sound of the K44's is pretty harsh, with really strong mid range. I tried breaking them in by running music through them for about 14 hours, (probably not long enough) but didn't notice any change. I will say that they are very comfortable, (not as comfortable as the 240's, but those are $80 more) and for the asking price you get a lot. I gave it four stars because my expectations for this price range were met. I woudn't consider a headphone that doesn't have full size ear cups, and these are self adjusting to your head. Again, I bought these because I needed closed back headphones and I like the way AKG's self adjusting system works. If you are looking for headphones to listen to music through, you're going to want to pony up a little more. On the other hand, for things like gaming or video editing, I would recommend these because of their low price and comfort over long periods.

For 20 dollars, these headphones are unbelievable. Here in Canada, that's the cost of sony earbuds. I have a 30 dollar set of Panasonic's and I like them, but these are so much better.
When I first bought them, I had trouble telling the difference between the Panasonic's and the k44's (the Panasonic's are a couple of years old with a lot of use under their belt). I keep the k44's plugged in my receiver constantly, including when I'm listening via speakers (sound goes through both speakers and headphones then). Either I can discriminate sound better, or burn-in really exists, (or a bit of both), because after 3 months (these headphones have had music pouring through them for about a thousand hours) there is no comparison between the k44's and the Panasonic's anymore. At first the k44's seemed/sounded a little hollow, but now their sound has thickened very nicely. I had been considering buying the 240S's even after first purchasing these because you can't really go wrong with a company such as AKG and I've been thinking about some more expensive headphones for a while. After what I'm hearing through the k44's right now there is no doubt that I'll be buying the 240S. Definitely not going to consider any other companies. Just a matter of getting some cash in the pockets. Buy them, let music pour through them for many many hours (just leave your stereo playing with only sound going through the headphones), and you will have probably the greatest under 100 pair of headphones available. My home also has a pair of $50-ish Sennheiser's and they are terrible: very fake and exaggerated bass that clouds the rest of the spectrum. The k44's sound very lively, without really coloring sound. Also, a friend has sony MDR-V500's that cost him about a hundred bucks, and the k44's aren't too far behind what the sony's are capable of.

Fair headphones for a fair price,

Over-all these are great headphones. The low range is surprisingly strong. The fit is great, even for a fat-head like me. The only thing lacking is the upper range which seems really tinny, & sometimes distorts. This seems to correlate with other reviews.
