2.0 out of 5 stars Good Sound Quality & Comfortable, but Poorly Made, May 15, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought these headphones after comparing pairs for a month, and when they arrived, I felt INCREDIBLY satisfied with my purchase.

The sound quality is undeniably great, though indeed the sound sometimes feels a bit compressed. The headphones are light and fit comfortably - I managed to wear these for 3 hours on end without soreness. All in all, the headphones were more than worth the $50. But what has turned me off from the k27i is its poor construction.

After less than a month of use, the right cup of the headphones detached. Just cleanly and completely came off. There was no evidence of material fatigue or breakage, and, yes, after a couple of attempts to reattach the cup I succeeded. I also contacted AKG in an attempt to exercise the warranty, since my pair was definitely flawed.

I know what you're thinking - shouldn't be anything to worry about, considering the 2-year manufacturing warranty. Well, I sent an email to AKG's U.S. branch of warranty service and they gave me this reply: "Unfortunately this is a non-warranty issue... if you'd like to send them in for a replacement we would be more then happy to replace them at a charge of $43.00 plus shipping."

Naturally, my reaction was shock. The cup of the headphones detached without any help and clearly the pair were in some way internally defective, yet I am unable to obtain service. No, according to AKG, I must purchase another pair.

The headphones lived up to my expectations but the company did not. I'm very disappointed in AKG's policy and feel cheated. For the short amount of time (keep in mind, this was a mere 3 weeks of daily use) I was able to enjoy my headphones, I rate them a 5. But considering the shoddy workmanship of the product and AKG's failure to stand by its warranty, I give the k27i a 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars great headphones for the price, June 23, 2006
First of all I want to clear up a little thing. When AKG says "mini", they mean mini. When folded, these things seriously fit comfertably in the pocket of my jeans.

Sound
HUMONGOUS bass (although a bit mushy) and very articualte highs. The mids are a bit compressed, but this is mainly due to the articulate highs. Overall, great headphones, especially for mp3's, the low-impedance on these make them EXCELLENT for mp3's (can get very loud with the 5G ipod at 1/3 volume). These also do a very good job at suppressing noise (better than some in-ears). Very good for rock, tochno or classical. The carrying case is also spiffy.

Comfort
ehhh, not too comfertable at first for people with glasses... A bit tight, but they get better after 2 weeks or so. The self-adjusting headband works very well and the earpads are comfy.

Style
Very modern looking with the white earcups and metal headband. Looks great with the ipod, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder (they look sweet to me).

Overall great headphones for people wanting good sound out of their mp3's without an amp. Pretty cheap for the quality, but there's always the K26P if these are too expensive.

I shopped online for probably two months before finally settling on these headphones. I wanted nice headphones to compliment my iPod, yet at an affordable price. The AKG K 27i is the perfect solution. After looking at other models by AKG, and other brands like Sennheiser and Bose, I thought I would have to spend at least $100 in order to get quality, but then I found these and I snatched them up.

The sound is excellent. When I first plugged them in, I thought they were a little quiet. But, then I discovered that there is a lanyard-style volume switch on the headphones themselves, which is fantastic. I don't have to reach into my pocket to turn the volume up or down on my iPod. The sound is very crisp and articulate, with deep, accentuating bass. And because these headphones are designed for portable mp3 players, my iPod is powerful enough to really push the drivers of the headphones.

The soft ear pads offer great comfort for long listening (and sound dampening! They block out a lot of ambient noise!), but the headband takes some getting used to, as it is a little bit tight. Once you adjust to it though, you can wear them for hours.

The last thing I will mention is the style. These headphones look great and the colors compliment the white iPod really well. They also fold up to an incredibly compact size, and they even come with a travel pouch. Now that is convenient.

If you are looking for great headphones for your portable mp3 player, I truly say look no further. I did so much research before settling on these, that I feel like I became an expert in the audio field. The AKG K 27i offers amazing sound, great comfort, compact size, and best of all, affordability.
