4.0 out of 5 stars Good fit, good sound, recommended for travelers March 14, 2011

Had these for a little while now and I am very pleased with the sound and noise canceling feature. I am a frequent traveler who requires the NC feature on all headphones. I actually prefer these to my Beats Studio, I am very happy with the sound quality and I like the fact that when NC is on the volume isn't diminished too much and that the music still plays if the NC is off, meaning that if your battery dies mid-flight you can still listen to tunes. The only complaint that I have is that the cable from the battery/NC piece is too short to the earbuds. The ONLY way you can use these is to clip it to your shirt. It is not long enough to sit anywhere while flying. I wish they would have made this cable long enough to sit in your lap while traveling. Overall I would recommend these to anyone who wants a great set of headphones for traveling without wanting the bulk or looks of the over-the-ear styles out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Multifunction May 5, 2011
By Ralf
Short Review:

While I think the noise cancellation could be better, I absolutely like the detail and clarity of the AKG. I do have Sennheiser CX400II (original), Beats by Dr. Dre and Shure 210s and must say that these AKG K390nc are my new favorite. Especially because they also function as a headset with Mic for my iPhone and Blackberry as well.

Bass is punchy, lots of crystal clear highs, rich, wide and open sound that really makes you enjoy the music.

I think these in-ears offer great value for money. They cancel out my A/C in the office 2/3rds.

I would purchase them again.

I checked Consumer Reports for its recommendations on noise cancelling earbuds and the AKGK390NC buds were rated number one. Consumer Reports was spot on. Even when my iPod was not playing, the earbuds blocked a lot of the ambient noise that can be annoying on long flights. I must admit, though, it's hard to wear them at work, but I can't hear people that come into my office.

1.0 out of 5 stars Battery case pulls earbuds out of your ears January 10, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased these for my wife who flies frequently to Europe. The product was highly rated by Consumer Reports, so I expected it would be good. However, there is a major problem. The buds connect to the battery pack via a very short cord. Unless you have a shirt pocket or lapel on your shirt to clip the battery pack on, the weight pulls the buds out of your ears. My wife wears mostly knit shirts and has nothing to clip them onto. I also tried to check the noise canceling and could not notice any reduction in the low hum of an exhaust fan. We returned them for a refund.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lifesaver June 1, 2011

I was skeptical about how well any noise canceling headphones would perform, but purchased the AKG K39ONC In-Ear headphones based on a Consumer Reports review. I was facing a 13 hour flight dreading the drone of jet engines and the struggle to hear a movie. They worked extremely well and made a huge difference in my flight comfort, I could watch movies almost unaware of the engine noise. From now on, I won't fly without 'em! I would give them 5 stars, but I wasn't sure they fit perfectly in my ear canal (even with trying the different size rubbery ear things), nor can I compare them since they are the first noise canceling headphones that I've used. By the way, the batteries lasted for the round trip (though they were not on all the time) and are still going strong. Very good product, I am pleased.

Product well packed, came on time, everything was in the box as promised and in excellent condition as promised. Already used it for many hours of travel, probably watched 8 in-flight movies with it. I love everything about this product, the noise cancelling is fantastic, the sound quality is absolutely incredible. These headphones has changed my entire travel experience, I can't wait to get on a long flight again. Short of being physically in a movie theater, these headphones "immersed" me in the movies despite being in a plane with over 160 other people. Absolutely luv it. I gave it a 4 (out of 5) stars only because sometimes I get a bit tired with the "in-the-ear" system; but then again....over-the-ear may also become a bit uncomfortable after a few hours, can't tell since I don't have one. Would definitely purchase another as a gift or to replace.

4.0 out of 5 stars It Is What It Is December 8, 2011

These work fine for what they are. However noise canceling headphones produce an inaudible frequency noise that helps override (cancel out) extraneous noise (any noise outside your music player). Having other sound canceling headphones I know, that feature alone makes music sound less "in the moment." I actually think it makes the music sound like it's off at a distance, unlike standard headphones where the music sounds right at your ear.

However that sound canceling feature also allows a lower volume, because you aren't trying to "out-shout" the extraneous noise around you, which helps protect your ears. These do have an advantage over most noise canceling headphones, these work with or without the canceling feature. Without this bypass feature, if the batteries die, you're headphones stop working. Just keep in mind music isn't going to sound the same as with standard headphones. It boils down to a trade off to help protect your hearing, because once that's damaged it's gone forever.
