I have used these headphones for a couple of weeks now with my Ipod in a diversity of settings. I very much like the soundscape they produce. I mostly listen to classical music: treble, midrange and bass are nicely detailed. The sound is spacious, natural, and has that threedimensional quality and 'attack' that gives a satisfying listening experience. Bass is not boomy, which is a killer in classical music. In symphonic music, instruments are clearly distinguished and retain their distinct, individual qualities. Voices sound fully natural. Pop music comes out thrillingly alive. They are sufficiently sensitive to crank up volume levels to concert hall proportions.

Noise cancellation is remarkably good, given that these headphones do not cover the whole ear. it is hard to attach numbers to it, but I would say under normal circumstances they cancel out 80 percent of ambient noise. In a very noisy plane they still cancelled out enough noise to provide a satisfying listenign experience In my commuter train they cancel out almost all noise. I only notice a certain bass heaviness when the noise cancellation function is active.

They are reasonably comfortable, and very light. I have listened for several hours at length without noticing them on my head any more. The headphones come in a handy travelcase.

I can only compare them to expensive, open-back haadphones. These are not in that league, but they come close. As you cannot take hifi equipment on the road, these more than suffice fo rme. For the discerning listener who travels a lot, I recommend these headphones highly. Particularly as they are a lot cheaper than comparable Bose or Sennheiser noise cancellation headphones.

These headphones are by far the best sounding headphones I have ever heard under $300. I compared the AKG's with the Bose Quiet Comfort 15 and the Sennheiser PXC450 and the sound quality of the AKG's is so far superior to the other two that it was absolutely no comparison. I agree the Bose has the best noise-cancellation capability, but they do not work without a battery and way over emphasize the bass. The Sennheiser's were worthless for the outrageous cost. I tried two different pairs, and the headphones tick on bypass mode and the noise cancellation has a loud deep buzz that occurs when you move around - both these issues occurred on both sets.

The AKG's have unbelievable sound quality - The bass is very rich and clean while the mids and highs are very smooth and crisp. The noise canceling works well with loud ambient noise such as fans, airplane noise, train noise, etc, but does not make a big difference with human voices. They are very comfortable and very portable. The carrying case is the nicest i have ever seen with a pair of headphones.

Bottom Line: Go with the AKG 480nc.....they will blow your mind!

I purchased these headphones on a whim after I bought my wife a pair of Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B headphones. I thought the ANC7B headphones had great sound, comfort, and excellent noise cancelation. Unfortunately they leaked a lot of sound when turned up beyond the quietest levels.

To contrast, the AKG 480NC have redefined my opinion of how well headphones can sound. The sound is superb, and there is very little noise leakage at high volumes. The noise cancelation is not as good as the ATH-ANC7B, the AKGs are "on-ear" not "around the ear" and cannot create the same seal around an ear. Because the AKGs don't leak much noise, you can turn the volume up a little higher, which also serves as an effective noise canceling method.

I'm very pleased with these headphones, and would recommend them. Though I'm not an audiophile, these have amazing sound and the noise canceling works decently.

Recently changed to a 5-star rating - i've compared these to quite a few different headphones, and haven't found any head phones that sound as rich, the price on these has come down a bit as well. They work very well.

I ordered these headphones as recommendation from a friend and boy am I glad I listened. As being a previous owner of Sennheisser and Bose noise canceling headphones, these headphones are far superior in both sound quality and comfort. They are also easy to store and fold with the included case, making them perfect for business travelers such as myself. If you have an opportunity I recommend you listen for yourself and compare and contrast with the other noise canceling headphones, you won't be disappointed.

After trying out the Sennheiser PXC310s, I thought I'd try these too - the Sennheisers sound and feel great but they have a very intrusive red flashing X on the ear when the noise reduction is on, so I was not sold on them for use when traveling.

The AKG's are very attractively made and packaged, and the sound is very good - on par with the Sennheisers. They are more efficient than the Sennheisers - less volume is required to power them. But the noise cancellation is FAR less effective, and far hissier, than the Sennheiser phones. So I'm going to live with the stupid red flashing X.
