All in all, a very nice sounding pair of headphones and a great value from a well respected company.

Now, I don't have a big head or a long face, but this headphone's fitting(fully extended) is seriously SMALL!!!
Dave
On closer inspection, its hardly a wonder as the piece that snapped is just a bit of chinzy plastic.

I purchased these headphones for my 16 year old for Christmas. He used them for two weeks and then BOTH earpieces broke in the exact same spot. One earpiece I would have suspected he wasn't treating them properly, but both in the same spot indicated that there was a defect in the manufacturing. I had my receipt and warranty so I didn't see a problem with getting them replaced. I was wrong! This company didn't even want to see the earphones. They told us over the phone they would not replace them. I insisted that they should inspect them, certain they would come to the same conclusion I did. Wrong again. I sent them into the service dept. at my own expense and they promptly told me NO they would not honor the warranty. I could of course buy a new pair from them. I wouldn't spend another penny on this company let alone $140 for defective merchandise with a bogus warranty!

There is nothing wrong with a set of $140 headphones that a $250 set won't cure. If your budget is $140, not $250, and you need on-ear headphones to be compact, folding, rich in bass, and strong in midrange, the "Limited Edition" K518LE series from AKG may satisfy your requirements.

The official description for this model is: "Closed-back earphones with isolating ear cups that attenuate ambient noise, keeping even quiet passages clearly audible." Try saying that a hundred times in rapid succession! It is accurate, to be fair.

What you get for $140 is attractive, stylish, well-built headphones in your choice of color accents: blue, fuscia, green, orange, red, white, or yellow. See photo below for the red version being evaluated.

Its folding, swiveling, padded ear cups are nicely engineered. The "R" and "L" to designate right and left ears are not easily located, which is ridiculous. Once you know where to look, you will remember which is which. Each earpiece slides out up to one extra inch, demarcated in ten increments, but if you have a large head, big hat, or a mountain of hair, the overall fit will be more snug than comfortable. The U-shaped headpiece is internally sprung, but not padded on its underside.

The rubbery cable is only three feet long, which is about three feet too short. Included accessories are a pull-string tote case and a 1/4 inch (6.3 mm) stereo plug adapter. AKG provides a two-year warranty.

Sound isolation is very good. Audio delivery is robust. Bass response is substantial. Midrange "punch" presence is well-focused. High-end is lacking, but these are not audiophile headphones. They are portable, DJ-style, geared to situations where flutes and piccolos are less in evidence than are rappers and pop artists.

My rating is based on how these headphones sound with a little modding. Unmodded, the bass on the K581 DJ LE is very heavy, thumpy, and muddy, always overwhelming the mids. Worth the under $40 price I got for like new from Amazon Warehouse, but not inspiring.

Open up the headphones, put a little blue tack and duct tape on the inner cup, and voila! They go from sounding like a $50 headphone to a +$100 headphone. The change in bass is like the difference in SQ between an $80 subwoofer and a $300 one. Still great bass impact, but now very textured well defined bass. Mids are now clearer and have more presence. THIS was the headphone I expected to begin with. AKG signature highs and mids, but with a strong, clean bass presence.

Search on head-fi dot org for information on using blue tack and duct tape to line the inside cup. It's an easy fix that makes a huge difference in the sound quality.

Nice sounding pair of headphones. Great color selection, and very nice value considering the more trendy and expensive but crappier sounding headphones out there. I am very pleased with the 518LE's so far. Yes, they are snug but not to the point of discomfort, at least for me but everyone's head is different. I also have a pair of Klipsch earbuds that most reviewers thought were incredibly comfortable but they don't securely stay in my ears, so everyone's fit will be a little different. The great thing about the AKG pair is that if you wear them actively, like on the treadmill, they will stay on without ever having to adjust or resecure them over your ears. I wish that the cord would just be a bit longer, but hasn't been a problem to this point. All in all, a very nice sounding pair of headphones and a great value from a well respected company.

Now, I don't have a big head or a long face, but this headphone's fitting(fully extended) is seriously SMALL!!! What was AKG thinking? Did the average adult head size in this world evolved to small all of the sudden, or was this designed for kids and they forgot to label it? If it weren't for the sound quality, I would give this a negative star. Good thing I have a 8 yrs old son so I just gave it to him to use when we go on road trip or fly.
