Product Description

C214ENGINEERED EXCELLENCEfor recording of lead vocals and solo instruments in studio and on stage

The C214 large-diaphragm condenser microphone has been designed as a cost-effective alternative to the high-end C414 family. Like the C414, the C214 offers a supreme one-inch capsule on an integrated suspension to reduce mechanical noise. A switchable 20dB attenuation pad allows recording of loud sources of up to 156dB SPL. A switchable bass-cut filter allows close-up recording with almost no proximity effect. The C214 captures sound by combining one capsule of the legendary C414 dual-capsule system and the patented AKG Back-Plate Technology, resulting in an outstanding performance close to the famous C414 XLII.

Cost-Effective Alternative

The new C 214 is designed as a cost-effective alternative to the high-end, industry-leading C 414 family. This new microphone uses the same 1-inch dual-capsule as the legendary C 414 in a single-diaphragm, cardioid-only design. The result is a class-leading performance close tothat of the famous C414 B-XLS.

Legendary Large-Diaphragm Sound

The C 214 has AKG’s legendary large-diaphragm sound and is capable of incredible 143 dB dynamic range for uncompressed, life-liketransients. The C 214’s edge-terminated capsule delivers a highly-detailed, up-front sound that brings out every nuance of any voice orinstrument. Thanks to its switchable 20-dB attenuation pad and low cut filter, the C 214 can be used in sound fields as high as 156 dB SPL –so it can be used on stage for close-up miking for even very loud applications like drum overheads, guitar amps or high-output brass.

AKG's Roadworthy Construction

The C 214 features an integrated capsule suspension that reduces mechanical noise and resonances for even greater sonic accuracy. The double mesh, all-metal grille protects the capsule and ensures high RF immunity without affecting acoustical performance. The C 214 hasa roadworthy construction quality with a modern scratch-resistant finish, a dent-resistant, metal grille and a gold-plated XLR-type output.

What's in the Box

The C 214 comes complete with carrying case, windscreen, and spider-type shock mount.

Nice Sounding Microphone. Interestingly I find it to have a similar frequency response to many stage-vocal condensers in that it has a distinctive curve meant to flatter its sound source--flat until 1000hz. This is not a neutral microphone but rather a microphone that accentuates. Your opinion may vary but I think it sounds nice. When the bass cut is selected, and without the -20db pad, it reminds me of a Neumann KMS 104. AKG makes nice mics and for the price it is a nice addition to a collection. I bought this microphone to use in conjunction with a Shure Beta-57 on a guitar cab for live work but also recording. The price, pad, and the frequency curve were its selling points. But it sounds good on anything with a voice.

I don't know what the other guy was talking about that gave a bad review. I rap and produe Hip-Hop, and everyone that has heard reordings done with this mic ask what studio was it done in. I have to tell them I have a studio at home. With the Profire 610, Logic, and this mic, that's what it amounts to. There is a need for some slight Eq, due to the fact that it records low-pass more so than hi-pass, but I do the EQ in Logic. Everyone agrees that my productions sound professsional. With an HD sound card and this mic, the sky is the limit! If you're short on cash, but want professional quality, the c214 is the way to go.

I went through the same process most other recording enthusiasts do, purchasing an AT2020 ans several MXL and other cheap condensers before finally getting this one. It makes all my other mics sound muddy and uncompromising.

I use this thing for vocals mostly, and the sound it captures is very transparent and defined. Even at the full $400 price tag, it is a great buy imo.

This condenser microphone will surely help those working in a project studio and/or up to big professional studio. However do not mistaken this for a cardioid only version of the c414 xls or xlii. This version is a totally different beast due to the way the capsule is made. It also does not sound similar to its older sibling and actually sounds closer to a c12 instead. If someone told you this is basically a c414 but a cardioid version then they haven't actually mic a/b test the two and most likely gave their opinion due to it looking strikingly similar. Now it doesn't mean this is bad or terrible, it is actually quite friendly since it gives out articulation to speech while not being harsh. Will it work on all voices, no it will not. Before you head out to buy any microphone, you should find out what is your tonal range and how your voice actually is rather than what you want it to be. This gives the voice some punch to those who hit a lower frequency in my opinion since bass or bass-baritones lack that clarity tenors tend to have. Since you're buying a mic in this price range of 300 already, you should test out other similar products like Rode NT2-A, Audio Technica AT4040, Blue Babybottle. I prefer the rode nt2a since it offers bang for buck. Not the best but is a great overall mic. The c214 won't disappoint if you know what you want out of the mic and knowing how to utilize it's axis for that sound you want.

I bought this mic on a Monday and it got to me on Wednesday, I was shocked at how fast it was shipped and delivered since I am not an amazon prime user.

Anyways my review for the mic.. The mic is great, I use it for making rap songs, it has crystal clear sound so when I mix vocals and instrumentals the vocals sit well in the mix. There's not much else to say I mean if you want professional studio quality music this is the mic to go with.

PS: I also own a Rode NT1-A mic and I compared it to this AKG C214 mic and the AKG is way better.

I shopped for a large diaphragm condenser mike with the cardiod pattern.
It has turned out to be sensitive and accurate at least up to 24" away, and the end voices, tenor and bari are as loud (or soft) as they're supposed to be...Thus...good cardiod pattern. We'll use it in shows. The damper nest-mount is a nice included feature with the wind filter included in the kit. I was concerned that I couldn't use my present mic boom, but discovered that the adapter plug will unscrew to open a threaded 5/8 socket that fits the mic boom perfectly. You don't need an adapter.
Don't know how it'll work with instruments but, for us, that's irrelevant. It fits the excellent reputation that AKG still has.

This uses the same cardiord capsule as the Akg c-414, which is an over 1000$ microphone. (the only difference is the 414 is multipatern and this is cardioid).
Picks up vocals great (spoken and sung), sounds great on a guitar amp, works for drum overheads, im sure sounds great on acoustic string instruments. Its versatile, reliable and cheap. It sounds crisp and clear but with a little sprinkle of warmth to it.

This Mic is beautiful! I used that Rode Nt1A before purchasing this mic, and while it ultimately depends on HOW you record and WHAT you do with it, this AKG Mic is just brilliant.
I'm using a Mic guard, and I get amazing results with this Mic.

Try it out for yourself
