Incredibly good cans for the money. With sweet sounding mids, crisp highs, and clear bass there aren't too many flaws with the overall sound quality. The one flaw I can think of is that the low bass rolls off a bit more than it should with the majority of the bass at a good level. They are also incredibly comfortable headphones with a self adjusting headband and large ear cups with velour pads.

Pros:
+ Really clear and crisp sound
+ Expansive and well imaged sound stage
+ Sounds good with most if not all genres of music

Cons: (minor)
- Not incredibly bassy although the bass is quite good
- Very large and don't come with case
- Non-removable cable
- Open back design allows sound both in and out making them not ideal for shared workspaces

As a note, my pair of AKG K612PROs were made in China and I believe all new K612PROs will be made in China. Regardless, as I do not have an Austrian made pair I cannot compare build quality and sound quality between the two. I can say that the build and sound quality are still quite admirable for headphones under $200. Of other headphones I've heard and own I only like the sound of my Beyerdynamic DT880 Premiums more. I will also say that acoustic music in particular sounds spectacular on these heapdhones, more so than electronic music. As a last note these headphones can be used unamped but may require higher volumes as stated in some of the FAQs and other reviews due to somewhat high impedance (120 Ohm) and low efficiency.

Very much enjoying these cans, though I'm sure they're not fully broken in yet. Using with an O2 headphone amp from JDS Labs (designed by the legendary, mysterious and now-incommunicado NW AudioGuy), through various sources: a NuForce uDAC, a Fiio E07K Andes, or directly from the Realtek HD onboard sound in my Asus Z87 motherboard (which surprisingly might be the best of the bunch).

Preliminary impressions: very well-balanced and tonally accurate. Love the open-air design's naturalness, expansiveness, and non-in-your-head quality, which I was first introduced to by the Grado SR80s, a pretty "fun" headphone due to its rather "hot" sound signature, probably better suited for rock and pop than the jazz and classical that I mostly listen to. That realization is what turned me onto AKG at the recommendation of many more experienced headphone enthusiasts, so I started out with the modestly priced semi-open K240s...beautiful in the all-important midrange, but a bit muffled at the top end and rather slow/messy down low. These K612s have fixed those two shortcomings, though they are admittedly harder to drive than the K240s.

Was looking at the Q701s, but after much internet research (pro and consumer reviews) decided against them due to some reports of brightness and being unforgiving with less than pristine recordings...if I had hundreds or thousands of redbook CDs or LPs at my disposal I might have gotten them anyway for the reportedly enormous soundstage, but most of music is FLAC and 320Kbps MP3s, so I turned to the K612 instead, which have the added benefit of being about 20% cheaper to boot.

I don't understand how one of the other reviewers found these headphones terribly uncomfortable...

These are the best headphones you can buy for 200 bucks. Honestly, you will not find better at this price point. I have heard several pairs of headphones at the 200 dollar price level. These include Beyerdynamic, Shure, Audio Technica, and Sennheiser. The K612 Pro definitely beats them all. They have a very neutral, and musical sound signature to them. These headphones are certainly not for bassheads. However, they are not lacking in bass either. They sound awesome for music, and also for gaming. The imaging, detail retrieval, and soundstaging allow you to detect exactly were the sounds are coming from during gaming sessions. These headphones have a tight and controlled bass, with a slight roll off in the sub bass region. Should you desire a little more low end, you can easily add 1 or 1.5db across the 30-60hz region with an EQ. The mids are smooth, musical, and slightly warm sounding. The treble on these headphones is not bright at all. It offers nice detail, while not introducing additional unwanted brightness or sibilance. Be aware that these headphones require a decent headphone amp and dac. If you are planning on running these off of garbage onboard audio, you are dreaming. If that is your plan, they won't sound right, and they won't offer a decent amount of volume. Get yourself a decent amp/dac combo for a couple hundred bucks, and you will be good to go. These headphones require a little burn in time, but not much. The pads soften up after about 10 days of use. The bass and treble will also smooth out after around 8-12 hours of usage. At around 12 hours or so, you will have a nicely balanced sound signature. If you are looking for headphones at this price point, this is the pair to buy. I highly recommend them. I bought my pair at a different store, but I needed to throw in a quick review here regardless.
