This is a very nice, sturdy, all wood workbench that is our 3yo grandson enjoys. Because of the solid construction, he'll be able to play with it for years. My only concern is that the "tools" provided (also all wood), aren't actually functional--the little screwdriver blade doesn't quite fit the screwheads, the little wrench doesn't quite fit over the nuts.

don't be fooled by the picture. what you see as the alex workbench 37 pc. with the robot and dump truck accessory, solid red sides with star shaped cutouts, is not what you will receive. click on the larger images and view the fifth picture. thats what you get. i returned one and explained that i had received the wrong my alex workbench, i ordered another one with reassurance from customer service and guess what, i was ripped off again, i got the same flimsy workbench that i sent back the first time. i wonder if they even have the one they show in the picture. i am not pleased.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
As a grandma I really wanted to like this toy work bench, but I can't give it five stars simply because the quality and materials are not sturdy enough to withstand daily hammering and use from toddlers. The work bench I received was damaged upon removing from the box although not unrepairable. The backboard arrived with broken pegs (the ones the tools hang on) but was easily fixed with some wood glue. The shipping box and the box the item was packaged in wasn't damaged so it's a quality control issue the manufacture needs to fix.
As for assembly, it doesn't get any easier than this-It only took about 15 minutes for me to completely assemble from start to finish. It's only held together by a few screws, again not enough, IMO, to withstand the daily use toddlers can dish out to toys.
The workbench itself is painted with vibrant, bright colors that easily catch the eye of toddlers both boys and girls. The "tools" and hardware (wooden pegs and screws) are perfect imitations of real items, only smaller, and work and assemble easily. I also like that all the items are made from wood, no plastic involved.
My grandson doesn't live close by so I only see him a few times a month, if that often. For my needs, a toy room that isn't visited often, I think this toy will hold up and last a few years. If I had a toddler living with me daily, I don't think the work bench would last very long.

Great Concept, but give a kid a hammer....
Pros: Working Vise, peg board, hammer & pegs, nuts bolts/screws. Cool. Smooth , no splinters. Son loved it.

Cons: Within 2 days, my son hammered (broke) off a peg off the peg board--choking hazard for smaller children, tore off the working vise, cracked the screwable part.
I should have gone with a durable plastic toolbench standby. Strong plastic is great.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This was easy to assemble out of the box, and my daughter was eager to begin 'building' some things with it. The pieces included are clearly very rudimentary and simplified for toddlers and young children - actual construction of real-life projects should not be expected. Using the pieces included kids can 'build' things by screwing and unscrewing, tightening and loosening nuts, ect. The pieces are bright and colorful, a good size for toddler fingers and hands.

Overall it seems a little on the flimsy side - I don't see the bench or many of the pieces lasting through more than one toddler, as their play can be a bit rough and abusive. If you're looking for something high-quality that will stand the test of time I would choose a plastic set. This set is cute, and can be fun for younger kids.

We do quite a bit of shopping on amazon for birthday gifts and although not all the reviews on the workbench were great we took a chance. Alex Toys had made some improvements since the old reviews. The tools fit the screws and the holes on the workbench have not enlarged with use. This can be a very LOUD toy! The cousins ages 2-3 were all playing with it and loving it at the birthday party. Easy to put together as well.

This was a nice work bench for our daughter who isn't terribly rough and tumble. The tools fit nicely with the bolts and screws and the nails need hammering. It isn't the most sturdy, so if your little person is more physical, he/she might make sawdust out of this workbench.

I purchased this when it was on sale, as my son (like many 3 year-olds) loves tools and putting things together/taking things apart. When we finally took it out of the box to put it together, I tried many different permutations to get it put together correctly, thinking I just wasn't understanding the process.

Turns out, it is not difficult at all to put together, the peg holes and screws are all just fine. The ruler was painted on the piece the wrong way! (Or, more likely, the holes and pegs were put in the wrong way.)

Since there is only one way to put it together, the ruler is upside down. While this isn't the end of the world, it's pretty prominent, and at 3 years old, not a time that I really want any confusion about numbers.

The proverbial nail in the coffin was the quality. While it seemed mostly OK, and was packaged really well, there were screws and nuts with pieces of paint missing around the holes in the pieces, looking like they paint everything first, and then drill and cut pieces. Very not cool, not for little kids. And to top it all, as I was screwing in the bottom piece (manually, with a screwdriver), I noticed what looks like a split right along where the screw goes in. While it would be an impressive feat of strength on my part (or a REALLY lousy piece of junk "wood"), I think it was there from when they predrilled it.

That said, my kids (18 months and 3) like playing with it. Mostly, they just bang things for now. If it lasts, I'm sure they'll get into other aspects.

SO - For a brand new, unflawed set, given all the quality concerns, I wouldn't pay more than $15. IF you get one that is in good shape. Amazon, of course, is phenomenal about returns, etc - so as long as you don't mind the possibility of packing it back up for UPS, and the price is right, go for it!
