Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8?In this fourth novel in the series, BKR, the cruelest being in the universe, has stolen Rod Allbright's body to get to his mind. In it is the formula for a bomb that will "destroy Time itself, freezing everyone in the universe in a state of total despair." But unknown to BKR, Rod's father has placed the contents of his son's brain into the body of Seymour, a no-mouthed, one-eyed, six-legged blue alien. The Galactic Patrol decides it must separate to pursue BKR and keep Seymour/Rod safe. When Rod's mother and twin siblings are kidnapped, a confrontation ensues with good triumphing over evil and Rod's body and mind reunited. But BKR has not been vanquished, leaving room for a sequel. Through Katherine Coville's detailed pencil drawings, readers are able to visualize many of the author's exotic creatures. Another light science-fiction adventure.?Debbie Feulner, Northwest Middle School, Greensboro,

From Booklist

In the fourth installment of the Alien Adventures series, Rod Allbright is in two places at once: his body is being held in suspended animation by the evil BKR, and his brain is residing in Seymour, an alien with six legs, one eyeball, and no mouth. While his father tries to get his body back, Rod travels with Madame Pong, Snout, and his cousin Elspeth to a planet full of danger from fellow travelers as well as trees that make you weep until you decompose. By the story's end, Rod has learned to master fear and comes to some conclusions about his personal code for living. Coville smoothly blends the gross (one character's pet noseworm) with the thrilling, and the funny with the thought provoking, creating an entertaining sf adventure. The many characters and references to plots developed in the previous books make this too complicated to stand alone, but it is a must for libraries with the other books in the series. The story comes to a highly satisfying conclusion and also wraps up a lot of loose ends. Susan Dove Lempke

More About the Author

Bruce Coville was born in Syracuse, New York, in 1950. His family lived in farm territory, about twenty miles north of Syracuse. Bruce grew up around the corner from his grandparents' dairy farm, where he spent a great deal of time as a child, dodging cows and chores to the best of his ability. As a young reader he loved Mary Poppins and Dr. Dolittle, and still has fond memories of rising ahead of the rest of his family so he could huddle in a chair and read THE VOYAGES OF DR. DOLITTLE. He also read lots of things that people consider junk (Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, Tom Swift, and zillions of comic books). His only real regret is the time he spent watching television, when he could have been reading instead. (A mind is a terrible thing to waste!)

His first book, THE FOOLISH GIANT, was published in 1978. It was illustrated by his wife, Katherine, whom he had married in 1969. This was followed in 1979 by SARAH'S UNICORN, also illustrated by Katherine. After a long period of working separately, the Covilles began collaborating again with SPACE BRAT and GOBLINS IN THE CASTLE, both published in 1992.

Before getting published Bruce earned his living as a toymaker, a gravedigger, a cookware salesman, an assembly line worker, and finally as an elementary school teacher (second and fourth grades). He left teaching in 1981 to devote himself to becoming a full time writer - though it took another five years to achieve that goal!)

Bruce has published nearly 100 books, which have appeared in over a dozen countries around the world and sold more than sixteen million copies. Among his most popular titles are MY TEACHER IS AN ALIEN, INTO THE LAND OF THE UNICORNS, and THE MONSTER'S RING. In 2001 he founded Full Cast Audio, an audiobook company dedicated to creating unabridged, full cast recordings of the best in children's and young adult literature.

I read Bruce's first two alien adventures when I was in fourth grade i loved them. So when I saw there was a third one I quickly read it. Finding out about this one yesterday I bought it and read it all in one night. It is his best book ever. I got in trouble for cheering out at 2:00 am. But I coun't help it if you like sci-fi read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't express how wonderful this book is...., June 9, 2001
take: action, adventure, Rod, Seymour, Snout, Madame Pong, a few new characters, and add suspence, closure (EVERY loose end tied up) as well as a possiblility (a small one) of possible Albright stories in the future.

Coville is a GENIUS! Don't miss this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars That's the end?, February 13, 2001

I /loved/ this last book. It was as enthralling as the previous three, if not more so. The only problem I had with it was that I didn't feel that the issue of Missing Atlantians was ever resolved.

Other than that, it's a great read. I'm 18, and like his Bruce Coville's other works, they're just as good to read as an adult as they are to read as a child.
