Book Description

October 27, 2006

E Komo Mai! Welcome!

Throw away the guidebook. Forget about umbrella drinks, helicopter rides and resorts. Welcome to the REAL Hawaii of working people, immigrants, and the children of immigrants; a beleagured but magnificent Island society rich in lingering history. Meet June, a young woman from the East Coast, as she discovers everything she never expected about "paradise." From rural neighbor island isolation, to Honolulu nightlife by way of drugs, sexuality and motorcycles, Junes new life is anything but easy - till an unexpected encounter changes everything. This is a wise little book masquerading as a good story. Stay Come! Just leave the cocoanut bra at home.

What Readers Have Said: "Lots of interesting inside information about Hawaii." "This is the book to read on the flight over." Fun to read, A good story. Good characters and scenes."

Spirit of Aloha August 5, 2007
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
As a Hawaii resident for the past 28 years, and having a passionate love for this place I call home, my heart warmed as I read Cloudia's book. If you want to experience the Aloha Spirit from the inside out, this book will touch you. Written as a rich, realistic story of a young woman arriving from the mainland, this book entertains, but more importantly, allows the real Hawaii to seep into your awareness, page by page, just as it does for those of us who live here. There are special people that embody the Aloha Spirit and warm our hearts, and the unique beauty of this place and her people, to enchant us. To give the book depth and substance, the spiritual awakening of June, through the inspiration of an unexpected stranger, leaves the reader inspired.

This book is perfect for anyone who loves Hawaii and her culture and wants to be touched by the magic of her spirit.

Informative AND Entertaining November 27, 2006
Format:Paperback
Having lived in Honolulu for a few years, I was interested to see if the author "got it right" about the local culture, etc. Turns out she not only got it, but, if her characters are any clue, she lived it, struggled with it and loved it. A surprisingly solid first novel by an accomplished "local girl."

This is one of the more enjoyable books I have read lately. I just spent a week of vacation in Hawaii (Honolulu, Oahu) with my daughter, by no means the first time - we love Aloha Paradise! This time, in addition to beach and the usual excursions, I wanted to learn a bit more about Hawaiian cultures, language and these extremely friendly people who populate the islands. But I didn't want to buy a boring history book. So, I came across this little paperback, with the attractive and different sounding title - "Aloha - Where you Want Go?". The story line depicts the adventures of a young lady from the 'mainland' (some of it probably reflecting the author's autobiography), who is determined to make a living in Hawaii. Despite the many setbacks - perhaps typical for most mainlanders who dream only of 'Paradise' - she is determined to make Hawaii her new home. With perseverance she succeeds, falls in love with the soothing, healing and astonishingly relaxing Hawaiian music, the friendliness of the locals - locals coming from all walks of life, mostly from Asia - Japan, China, Korea, Philippines. Cloudia Charters beautifully portrays the Hawaiian island ambiance. The sunshine, the warmth of the people - sometimes it's almost like feeling the Tradewinds blow.

What really makes this fast-paced book even more enjoyable, interesting and instructive is the interwoven history of Hawaii, the social background of its inhabitants, the different languages and how they evolved of generations. - Its a jewel and a MUST for any Hawaii lover, who perhaps would like to get a sense of why he / she is attracted to these Polynesian Island group, called Hawaii. Congratulations Cloudia!
