5.0 out of 5 stars Camping cot, July 22, 2011

This review is from: ALPS Mountaineering Titan Cot (X-Large, 40 x 85 x 21-Inch) (Sports)
My husband likes the cot a lot. It's very comfortable... however, it is definitely for a tall person. I'm 5'7" and tried it and when putting my feet over the side of the cot they could not reach the ground and I had trouble getting out of it. So it is definitely better for a person who's probably at least 6' tall or more. Otherwise, you should work on finding the best way to get out of it in the a.m.! But as I said, my husband said it was great and he likes it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Well Made Cot, July 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: ALPS Mountaineering Titan Cot (X-Large, 40 x 85 x 21-Inch) (Sports)
The cot arrived on time but the box had damage and the carry case as well as the cot had cuts. Amazon promptly sent a replacement that arrived in 2 days in excellent condition. The new design of this cot is easier than the old one to set up and it has a great weight capacity. The mesh pocket on the side is great for keeping things off the floor. I have not slept on it yet but I will be using it next week on a mission trip. I am hesitant to give 5 stars as I have not slept on the cot yet.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not good to use in a tent, July 16, 2011
This review is from: ALPS Mountaineering Titan Cot (X-Large, 40 x 85 x 21-Inch) (Sports)
Short version: Used it camping last week. The center legs of the cot put two tiny holes in the bottom of the $400 tent I bought last year and was using for the first time.

Longer version: I normally buy products that have been reviewed before but made an exception for this product. It looked good and was cheaper than other cots this size. Big mistake. I hope others can benefit from my review. I bought this cot to use for camping. I got to use it last week and was disappointed. I set it up the first night camping and it was easy enough to put together. I slept in it the first night and it was comfortable enough, nothing special but not bad. I woke up the next morning and went to move the cot a little closer to the wall of the tent and out of the way. When I moved it I looked down and noticed a small hole in the depression where the center leg was. My thought was that can't be. I got down and look at the depression where the other leg had been and saw another small hole. After calming down a bit I covered the holes with duct tape and tried to figure out what happened.

If you look at the bottom of the center legs they are much smaller, and squarer than the bottom of the legs on the end of the cot. The two center support rods meet right on the bottom of the center legs. You are putting a lot of press on these two center legs. Apparently when you lay on the cot there is enough give with the center legs of the cot that they move a tiny bit. This movement combined with my body weight (230lbs) pushing down of the center legs plus the small size of the hard rubber pieces with the square edges caused the tears in the bottom of the tent. I also think the telescopic legs they boast of in the description added to the problem. Since it was the first night of a four day camping trip and I did not want to spend money on an air mattress or sleep directly on the ground I tried a couple of quick fixes.

I put a couple of pieces of duct tape on the bottom of the center legs. Seemed a little better but not enough that I was willing to risk putting more holes in the bottom of my tent. I wound up going out to a Walmart and buying felt coasters that you put under chairs to keep them from scratching floors. They created a wide enough base and protection to spread out the weight and keep they floor of the tent from being further damaged.

I can not recommend this product. There is no way I should have to waste time on a camping trip to figure out a way to keep the cot from ruining my tent. Luckily I spotted the holes after the first night and can repair the holes. Once again not something I should have to do. This cot is probably fine to use if you are in a house and want it for guests. It is not fine to use for camping unless you want to make some modifications first.
