Early 70's essential (almost) POP!,
By
This review is from: AM Gold: Radio Gems (Audio CD)
Disregard the other review! This character calls "Afternoon Delight" a "slut" song (I have no idea what that means). The song was #1 for 2 weeks in 1976 and everyone I knew was singing it. Hey, these are POP classics, not hard rock songs. Melanie's "A Brand New Key" had sexual undertones that most of us grasped (the other reviewer called it silly, he probably thought Moby Dick was a story about a whale)(#1 for 3 weeks). "Brandy" (#1, 1 week) is the type of song that defines 70's music, Nilsson's "Everybody's Talkin" (#6) was the backbone of the "Midnight Cowboy" ST, still one of the best ever. Charting at #3, "Wildfire" was a haunting ghost story while "Wedding Bell Blues" by the 5th Dimension continued Laura Nyro's string of hits (#1 for 3 weeks). The weak sisters are "Seasons In the Sun" (listen to the Kingston Trio's version) and "Sara Smile" (eventhough this may be the best song Hall and Oats ever did, that's not saying much). In reality, I had all these songs on other anthologies. I bought this CD for "Put Your Hand In the Hand" by Ocean (#2) as it's one of the few "spiritual" songs I like.

I'm a young adult branching out and trying to expand my musical tastes, and when I saw this cd in a .99 cent bin brand new, I decided to have a go at it. The only song from the album I heard from prior to buying this cd was Terry Jack's "Seasons in the Sun", which till this day I fairly enjoy, despite it's sad story.
However, just listening to the cd from beginning to end I was amazed at how much of the cd I enjoyed. "Brother Louie" is a nice little love isn't skin deep ballad. "These Eyes" by the Guess Who is by far one of my new favorites, and if you love "American Woman" by the Guess Who I suggest you look up "These Eyes" if you have yet to discover it for yourself. Melanie's "Brand New Key" was a hoot to listen to, even if you don't get all the subtleties she tries to hint at. "Put Your Hand in the Hand" by Ocean is a great pop tune, doesn't matter if you're religious or not, I dare you not to enjoy it. "Sara Smile" by Hall & Oats was another nice ballad added, and "Wildfire" was really errie and I thought the lyrics were awesome. Afternoon Delight is also listed, which isn't about Having Sex in the afternoon, but about a menu special title that one of the writers of the song was inspired by. Finally I have to give it up for the big shocker 5th Deminsions "Wedding Bell Blues". I had never even heard of 5th Deminsion prior to this cd, and the song is so catchy I love it. Didn't care too much for "Brandy You're a Fine Girl", "One Toke Over the Line", they just didn't seem to be as catchy as the other songs. Finally "Everybody's Talkin'" By Harry Nilsson was a big disappointment. I know it's a classic and everything, but it appeared to folky for my liking. There's my review on the tracks, I hope this helps. This is a great starter cd if you're someone like myself who wants to listen to something new, and is into more of soft pop/soft rock, but all from artists you normally haven't heard of before, or never even thought about listening to before.

ODD SAMPLING,
By A Customer

This CD does present some of the pivotal work from those days. Note the odd resemblance to Rod Stewart in Brother Louie. That slut song AFTERNOON DELIGHT is included as well as stupid I'VE GOT A BRAND NEW KEY, DO YOU HAVE A PAIR OF ROLLER SKATES. Possibly a neat collectable, before you need a cholectomy.
