Not quite what I expected, December 21, 2009
This review is from: AMC White Mountains Map Set, 28th (Map)
The details of these maps are everything I hoped they would be, however it's the paper that they're printed on about which I'm writing this review. I was expecting something akin to the Appalachian Trail maps--a thick, slick, waterproof, sweat-proof, rip-proof, practically bombproof paper/plastic amalgamation. These white mountain maps are much thinner, and while they do appear (I haven't used them in the field yet) to be both water- and tear-resistant, I have my doubts on their durability over seasons of use. On a more positive note, the thinner paper is considerably lighter.

Don't worry about material, July 6, 2011
This review is from: AMC White Mountains Map Set, 28th (Map)
A couple of reviewers here are concerned about the material map is printed on. It's Tyvek, just like the white envelopes people use for mailing sometimes (including those slippery Fedex envelopes). Tyvek is pretty bombproof, even though it feels lighter and less substantial than the laminated maps. I MUCH PREFER the Tyvek because I can fit it in my pocket if I fold it again in half. If this thing was laminated, it would be a beast to carry. I've used my AMC maps many times over the last 6 months, including on some very rainy overnights where I was taking the map out every 20 minutes or so in torrential rain. They look good as new.

Nice Maps, November 10, 2011
This review is from: AMC White Mountains Map Set, 28th (Map)
I bought these to replace the cheap paper ones that came with my guide book. They are a little expensive for the quality I think but they will last a lot longer than the paper ones which didn't make it through one summer of use. I love the detail and the millage given between trails is really nice. These are not heavy duty laminated maps so they are nice and light and fold up really small to save pack space.
