Product Description

AMD's third generation APU provides another impressive step forward in technology. The Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) boasts 42% of it's genetic make up as GPU based, utilizing the Radeon HD8xxx series, making this the industry's fastest APU. That allows AMD to deliver balanced architectures for future heterogeneous computing while winning at today's gaming, compute, imaging, and video workloads. Nowhere else is the best performance for mainstream computing be found for such an incredible value!

The built in GPU is decent and can do some basic gaming.
m.k.k.
That being said Skyrim is auto-detected at High settings and plays well at that setting.

It's more than adequate for a HTPC and has played all movies, and TV without a hickup.

I initially bought a 6500 for a new HTPC that I was building. It runs Plex and I eventually started sharing my library my family. When they watch it transcodes out to their location. This plus the dozen or so other services running on the server while watching 1080p proved too much for the 6500. The 6700 isn't even phased by a heavy load of watching. I highly recommend this for high traffic HTPC.

If you know you'll only be watching on the system you should be able to save a few buck by stepping down to the 6500.

I recommend sticking with a non 'K' variant on an HTPC since you're not likely to overclock and you'll save money with 65w vs. 100w in the long run.

(I'm also bitcoin mining on it at 90 MH/s to offset the electricity since it's always on, but that is probably no longer cost effective)

What is there left to say about this CPU that others haven't said? It is powerful enough for most home systems that are not meant for hard-core gamers. It drives two 27" screens with ease while running multiple apps, including photoshop, illustrator, and so on. Stays cool and quiet.

I upgraded from an AMD Athlon II X4 620 2.6GHZ 95 watt and am very happy with this new APU.

The speakers include a Klipsch RW12D 12-inch Reference Subwooferthat I reviewed Aug. 26, 2013.

This computer is in the media room but it cannot be heard when sitting within 3 feet even during very quiet scenes. This is only after setup of firmware and hardware.

1. By using a separate $40 fan-less video adapter the entire power of the APU is devoted to computing so this system has quite adequate speed for software development and multitasking.

2. By using a power supply with a bottom 120mm intake fan and mounting it in a case that has a filtered bottom air inlet mating to that fan, the power supply never gets warm enough to turn on that fan. The 90mm rear fan is disconnected! The case has 3 120mm exhaust fans which combine with convection forces to move a lot of air. Sadly Enermax no longer makes that power supply.

3. By activating the motherboard push button for "OC Genie" the CPU auto selects speed (1.8 to 4.2 GHz) and voltages while minimizing power use and fan noise.

4. By activating CPU Smart Fan in the MSI Control Center app, setting fan minimum speed @67% control point at 76°C and 91% fan maximum at 90°C, the CPU stays below 90°C and the stock APU fan has very low sound.

A problem I first attributed to the APU was my new 1866 MHz memory stuck at 1333 MHz and AMD incorporates the memory control in the APU. By changing the DDR3 speed from [AUTO] to [1866]in BIOS I sensed a speed improvement and the MSI "BIOS II" app for the first time shows the DDR3 actually running 1866MHz.

Built a new HTPC to replace the old system that had a AMD 3.4Ghz Regor CPU (dual-core). This APU easily handles everything thrown at it including full uncompressed Blu-Ray backups streamed over the network (30GB+ files!!!). The only game i've tried on it so far is Defense Grid which ran flawlessly (albeit at 1280x720). It's the perfect processor for a HTPC.

System specs:
-This APU
-Asrock FM2A85X-ITX motherboard
-8GB G.Skill Ripjaws (1600)
-Kingston V300 60GB SSD
-Corsair H60 watercooler
-Silverstone SUGO5BB case

Its ok if you aren't planning on playing games, Media performance is great but it can't handle too much load. It gets around 65 degrees if you use it for 4 to 6 hours or more with the stock cooler.
