5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible!, August 25, 2005
This review is from: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Processor Socket 939 (Personal Computers)
This CPU is lightning fast!
I bought a new desktop with this AMD 4400+. It fully install a Windows XP Home in about 10 minutes I think. The computer restart faster takes less time for my old computer to shut down, which is using P4 2.53GHz. The system is cool and quiet like the AMD's technology. I can play Battlefield 2 online for several hours and the system is still at 40 degrees Celsius only! This CPU has best value to performance ratio among all other AMD Dual Core CPUs. I am NEVER going back to Intel!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Multitasking and Future-proof, May 2, 2006
This review is from: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Processor Socket 939 (Personal Computers)
This CPU is one of the best processors out for multi-tasking. It is a great value for your hard earned money. If you mainly do only one thing on your computer at a time, you would be better off with a single core Opteron processor, but if you're like me and are ripping CD's in the background and want to continue using the computer for other things such as playing games, surfing the internet, or any other task, this processor is for you.

I have to list a few disclaimers that you should know before you buy this processor. First, if all you want is raw power, one of the single core Athlon FX series chips would be a better fit for you. Secondly, this chip seems to overclock fairly well. I have mine running at 2.6GHz from 2.2GHz stock, but the Opteron dual cores would be only a few dollars more, and they seem to overclock better. Thirdly, some games have issues with running on two cores and will lag. I've found that this is solved by simply setting the affinity of the process to one core only.

To sum it up, this is a great processor for the price, and allows one to run multiple programs at once with little slow-down. The processor will only improve with time to come as more programs and games are made that will take advantage of multiple cores.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Processor Socket 939 (Personal Computers)
I recently was faced with the task of either buying a new computer or rebuilding one that had bit the dust. For several reasons I chose the latter. As part of the rebuild I chose to upgrade to a dual core processor. I chose this unit for two reasons.........features and price. My original chip as a single core at 2.4G with a 512K L2 cache and rated on the cpubenchmark scale at 592. I wanted to go to a dual core equivalent which would be a X2 4600 or 4800, but both of these were very pricy since these are discontinued......try around 400 bucks for a used X2 4800. The price is because these are a socket 939 processor. Anyway, the 4400 is a 2.2G processor with dual 1M L2 caches. The price was very reasonable (found one for 125 through Amazon marketplace) and is now installed after receipt of a higher capacity sink/fan combo and is running great. The cpubenchmark for this chip is 1195 so I expect it to run somewhat faster, but currently I have no real demanding applications to prove such. It does appear that windows loads faster, the initial desktop screen pops into place with all icons loaded, whereas before they would load in batches. Windows defintely closes down faster. All in all, it seems to be running faster and the numbers say it is a faster chip. I am pleased with my purchase and the Amazon Marketplace vendor (Extreme975) was a pleasure to work with. I would definitely use them again if the opportunity arose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Performance today, power tomorrow, May 25, 2006

The future of CPUs is undeniably multi-core. Obstacles such as heat have forced both AMD and Intel to begin devolping CPUs with multiple processing cores, opening up a new world of possibilities. Multitasking becomes far more time-efficient as the power of two CPU cores is brought to bear on multiple programs.

At 2.2 Ghz, the 4400+ sacrifices very little in terms of clock speed. Therefore, this CPU loses very little in terms of single-threaded performance, while gaining all the benfits of having a second processing core. As time goes by, the potential of this processor will be realized as software developers write their programs to exploit the power of multi-core CPUs. Even now, there are a number of programs that are multi-threaded, and even more should begin to appear in the future.

This is a good investment, as its future-proofing is quite high. I've been able to run as many as five programs on my 4400+ and it doesn't break a sweat. I give this my unconditional recommendation.
