Number of Cores
Many modern CPUs have multiple cores. The number of cores is the number of processors that make up the CPU. Having more cores allows the CPU to perform more calculations at once, meaning less wait time.

I am a pragmatist when it comes to computer hardware so don't worry about this little review being untrustworthy on account of product love.
I got this as an upgrade for one of my dedicated render (Blender Cycles and Luxrender) machines. I equip those render machines with AMD CPUs instead of Intel ones since, even though they are not AS fast, they give great mutli-threaded performance and - in my experience - put on less heat and are therefore are more stable for long, intense, workloads.
I still use an Intel i7-960 in my main system since Intels chips are so expensive and often need a whole new motherboard to go with them. By comparison AMDs chips work on motherboards old, new, and still to come. Another point of comparison between the two is the heat that they put on. The i7 has on several occasions (usually during long Luxrender runs) actually overheated and shut down the computer. So far this FX-8350 has yet to go above 58C and outperforms the i7 system by more than 40% in the applications I use it with. I do realize that the i7-960 is both older and a 45nm chip as opposed to the brand new (at time of writing) and 32nm architecture of this FX chip. So some may view this as an unfair comparison. Maybe, but for anyone in a similar situation (wanting to upgrade to a new chip from their old Intel but unwilling or unable to cover the costs of the upgrade) may be interested in looking at this great CPU.
Update (April 2013): The 8350 continues to work every bit as well as I said before. I recently upgraded the CPU in my Intel system to an i7-990X (the best available that my 1366 motherboard will support, and at time of writing $900).Read more ›

I chose this processor to put into my new PC gaming build. There really isn't much to complain about in terms of capabilities. This processor features 8 physical cores running at 4.0 GHz right out of the box, and overclocks to 5.0 GHz with advanced liquid cooling systems and a capable motherboard and power supply configuration.
Installation is as easy as dropping it into your motherboard, applying thermal paste (preferably Arctic Silver 5), and attaching your CPU cooler. I haven't had any issues caused by this processor at all. With flawless gaming and multitasking performance, this processor simply does anything you can throw at it. While Intel chips in the same range boast better core-to-core performance, the FX-8350 really shines in multithreaded applications. Pound-for-pound, the power of these processors is nothing to be underestimated.
Given that this is currently AMD's top-of-the-line CPU, you should go with a motherboard containing the latest chipset (990FX), as anything less is a bit of a hindrance to the CPU's performance. However, beware Gigabyte's GA-990FXA-UD3 motherboard, is it has been reported to have CPU voltage throttling issues specifically with the FX-8350.
Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with this product, as I always have been when it comes to AMD. If you're looking for enthusiast-level performance at an affordable price, this CPU is what you're looking for!

Was worried about performance by all the reviews, decided to take the plunge. Upgraded from an AMD 965BE witch to me was a very good processor, setup with hd6950 crossfire. Installed the fx-8350, difference was night and day. Frame rate increased no more choppiness smooth as butter. All programs open and close as fast or even faster with the fx-8350. Couldn't be happier. Thanks AMD

I am a Linux user and X264 encoding performance is important to me. Code compilation speed is also important.
I've just replaced my 1055T X6@3.4GHz with the FX-8350@4.7GHz. I ran benchmarks before and after the conversion. My X6 benchmarked X264 at 109fps and my FX-8350 benchmarks @190fps. That's a 74% increase from a drop-in replacement! Interestingly the Intel 990X benchmarks at 129fps on openbenchmarking.org, so it beats a $1000 chip by 47%!
These are the benchmark results for a stock FX-8350, my X6@3.4 and my FX-8350@4.7.
