I bought this to replace a AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition. This is an older processor but it's what my motherboard supports and I'm not quite ready to upgrade that yet. The benchmarks on my system rated this quad core higher then the dual core it replaced and that's good enough for me. The idle and load temps are about the same as the X2 were so no upgrades were required on my CPU cooler and that was a bonus. If you're looking for a cheap priced quad core and don't want to, or can't, go to the AM3 socket then this is the one to get. I'm going to get a water cooler for the CPU and a new case soon and start playing with OC... all the reviews say this processor will overclock easily and that will be a good bump to performance for the price.

My System:

Antec Performance XT case

Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe Wireless motherboard

Win7 64 bit OS

AMD Phenom 9950 quad core processor

8GB Kingston HyperX Blu DDR2 memory 800 MHZ (4 x 2GB)

Asus Silent Knight CPU Cooler w/ artic silver 5 thermal paste

XFX AMD Radeon 6870 Black Edition Video Card

2 x 320GB WD Hard drive (C and D drive)

2TB Mirrored Raid (storage)

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick Quad, July 27, 2009
This review is from: AMD Phenom X4 9950 Black Edition. 125W Power, Socket AM2+, 4MB Cache, 2600 MHz. (Personal Computers)
Had this processor for a year or so and I must say it is an excellent performer. This is the first time I have had 10 firefox windows, microsoft excel, CAD, windows media center, photoshop, you name it, all running at the same time and never see over 60% on just 2 of 4 cores. You can preach benchmarks all you want but the king is the almighty dollar and this is true bang for your buck. At this price this chip is a steal and I have seen it for even cheaper. It OC's pretty well too. 3GHz without voltage increase and slightly over 3.2GHz with small increase. If you need a fast, cheap, rock solid quad then this is it.

All I can say is that it runs Vista 64-bit like a champ. Very, very fast.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast. You know? It's fast., January 27, 2009

Very fast. It works. I had a dual core Athlon X2 5200+, and it was bottlenecking my system. Especially with GTA IV, which is optimized for three and four-core CPU's. I upgraded to this processor and got a 20 fps increase in that game, which made a huge difference. But I was suprised, it didn't really make any difference for Flight Simulator X. I have the latest patch for it, which is supposed to include better support for multi-core processors for faster performance, but I don't know if I believe that now. Anyway, it's a great processor. I use a Zalman 9700 and it keeps the processor plenty cool.

I have an ASUS Crosshair motherboard which can automatically overclock the CPU based on temperature and need, so I just let it do that because it works suprisingly well. I probably couldn't do it much better myself.

Also, my motherboard is only AM2, not AM2+. This processor WILL work on AM2 boards, BUT, you won't be able to use the L3 cache (which is a pretty big deal) unless you have an AM2+ board. Overall, great processor.

I can sum up this chip very quickly....it CRANKS. Its one awesome chip. I bought the 9950 over three years ago and it does everything I need it to do. Works well with Windows 7 too.

Paid $30 for this Phenom 9950 x4(125w). Replaced a 4850b x2(45w). Wanted to stay under 95w cpu but for $30 why pass that up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what I need it to do, September 29, 2009
This review is from: AMD Phenom X4 9950 Black Edition. 125W Power, Socket AM2+, 4MB Cache, 2600 MHz. (Personal Computers)
I installed this into a Foxconn Destroyer motherboard - That crazy motherboard has everything in it including the kitchen sink.

I run it stable at 3.2 gig all day long and do allot of multitasking as well. I have run it higher to 3.9 gig but it was rebooting randomly.

I am also running in SLI two Nvidia 9600 cards with 768 DDR2 memory; hey it play crysis at 1600x1200 at 45fps and above topped at 67fps. If you want nuts that motherboard I CAN RUN TWO OR THREE OR FOUR CARDS SLI.

I am using a chilltech cpu cooler that is air AND USES A TEC as well; I stay frosty at 31-30c ALL THE TIME.

4.0 out of 5 stars Phenom 9950 performance, June 3, 2009
This review is from: AMD Phenom X4 9950 Black Edition. 125W Power, Socket AM2+, 4MB Cache, 2600 MHz. (Personal Computers)
the overall performance is great the stock clock speed is 2.6Ghz. I have it clocked at 2.8Ghz stable as a rock. As for heat i am using an asus silent square evo with AS5 thermal compond and idle temps are about 46C and under heavy load (Crysis on ultra high) temps never go above 56C. I have just recieved my new cooler that i am about to test which is a Coolermaster V10 which is not only a great air cooler but also has a built in thermoelectric cooler!!!.
