I bought this due to the other reviews that stated that it worked well with children and folks that weighed less. This was in fact the case. I had 4 boys using it along with their fathers. It worked equally well for the dads and their sons. I had another descender that was significantly smaller and that unit worked well for the dads, but was not very easy for the boys to use.

Reliable, strong, big, heavy. I use it in my rigging for aerial silks in my backyard. Works great; just like the professionals.

I take large groups of scouts out rappelling. We use larger ropes and always use two at a time. Rescue 8s work much better for the boys because they are larger. With a regular 8 the ropes don't fit well, and a lightweight boy can barely overcome the friction. You also get the benefit that it is almost impossible for an in experienced rappeller to girth hitch when descending.
These show ware faster than other rescue 8s out there (thus the loss of a star), but they are only a fraction of the cost. Overall a great deal, especially when you are buying them 4 or 5 at a time. I like these so much I use one for myself and leave my more expensive rescue 8 on my belt!

I hope I never have to use it for rescue, but it's a great addition to my backpacking gear for mountainous areas. The aluminum one is substantially lighter than the steel one, which another big plus when weight is an issue.
