2.0 out of 5 stars I have had three of these since they came out, they arent worth it, November 7, 2011
This review is from: AMS Bowfishing® Retriever Pro Reel (Misc.)
We shot with Bear circle reels, the big aluminum hoops and solid metal spools that you hand wrap the line on to. And for years that was all we ahd, then the Zebco big spincast reels came out and boy that was a great improvement.

then AMS showed upa nd came out with the first 'retriever' reel and we all loved it.

BUT, if you shoot it very much and use the reel to control the fish you will find that the friction wheel gets a groove cut into it and the line stops coming in, they sell replacement parts. IN fact they sell replacement parts for the whole reel and you WILL be ordering them if you do any amount of shooting.

granted we shoot alot, 30 hours a week every week from ice out til ice in, but the problems we have with the AMS retriever reels is not in keeping with the use and abuse.

They simply are prone to problems

the most common problems;
*The line jams in the bottle while reeling in, so you must pull it all out of the bottle while fighting a fish and start over. If this happpened once a week we would say fine, but this will happen a couple times a night with each reel.

* the reel will fall apart. the handle will come off even if you lock tight the hell out of it, it still will work loose, only gorilla glue holds it on.

* the bottle cap stops fitting. the bottle will fall off spilling line everywhere, the cap gets worn out and yep, they sell replacements, annoying as hell.

* the line pours out of the bottle when you aren't shooting. they have the new reels with a line clip, but the clip is pretty pathetic, so the line will still be loose and then you lean forward and draw on a fish, and i you dont shoot and let down, next thing you know there is 5 feet of line poured out and tangled on everything.

* the line TANGLES. I dont mean it gets a little tangled up, I mean you put the bow down and light a light and sit there untangling line, anything will tangle it, heavy weeds, twigs, and branches, it will tangle on itself, the only way it wont tangle is take really short shots, 6 feet is about right, and keep the line SOAKING WET. it will still tangle on everything but it wont tangle on itself as much.

*have really long fingers, the lever you use to apply pressure to reel the line in feels like it is two feet away from the riser, the new reels cmoem with a rubber hose pushed onto the reel lever and the other end you jam in your bow riser somewhere, this is so you can grab the hose instead of the lever which is two feet away. Reall poor idea.

*The bottle will come off when you bump it in the boat. not if, its WHEN. it WILL come off at some ppoint on you, from tehn on it will never work right again all the time.

*you end up fighting the fish by hand and then reeling in the line once the fish is off the arrow. its faster than the old solid hoops and reels you wrap on by hand but the solid reels are 12 bucks and the AMS Pro is dang near a hundred bucks with shipping.

Over all it is a nice reel if you miss alot and are doing nothing but reeling in loose line, it will still tangle and jam up and free spool but it is faster to handle and get back in action than the wrap on reels.

It is still alot slower and clunkier than a Muzzy or Zebco spincast reel and the arrows fly alot faster and flatter and penetrate better with the zebco spincast reels versus the ams retrievers.

I own two retrievers right now one was a gift and the other came on the AMS bow, which is really cheap junk, but thats another review.
I would recommend buying the PSE Wave bow fishing bow that is coming out, I shot it and have a prototype and it is awesome, and I would put a zebco or muzzy spincast reel on it. You will be alot happier.
