This review is from: AMT Star Trek USS Enterprise "E" 1/1400 (Toy)
Good model to assemble but too many fine plastic edges to smooth over before assemble. Requires masking of some areas before overall painting which was very difficult due to ridges and grooves in plastic that required taping.

This model is not what I expected it to be, having said that it is ok. I bought the first Enterprise E back in 1997 when it first came out and it measures about 19'inches long. This Enterprise is not quite that long. My main complaints about this ship are:
1.) It's white, so you have to spend money buying a lot of paint to cover the areas needed. 2.) The plastic for this particular model is not very durable, and so I would NOT recommend this for CHILDREN. The plastic that holds up the engines is very thin compared to the 1997 version of this ship. My advice would be for anyone who has time and wants a quality model, purchase water-based acrylic paints (if not sure then ask someone at a hobby store) and use them. What I did was water them down and use them like watercolors (at first) to test the effects on the plastic. Some colors work like a dream and others darken due to the chemical compounds in the plastic. But if you mix the right amount of water and paint, you can soak the model parts in the mixture over night and the next day you end up with a very nice paint job. If the paint is not thick enough to your liking then you repeat the process. The idea being is that the more layers you apply, the smoother the colors will be and the more realistic the paint job will be. I like acrylics because you can manipulate the colors very easily and Google any questions you have on mixture ratios. But you will achieve much better color results from painting it this way. If you are pressed for time or lazy, I recommend visiting your local hobby store for spray paints, never use standard spray paint because it WILL EAT THE PLASTIC ALIVE!!! :0 Overall, I wish the model was MUCH bigger and durable. But if you are a geek like me and love the Star Trek ships then it's worth the buy. However, rumor has it that there will be a series of releases of starships for 2010. If you are not in a hurry then I would email a few hobby companies and ask them. AMT or others may come out with a better model in the future.

I've always been a fan of this ship, when I saw it I knew I had to buy it...and I'm very happy with my purchase. =]The whole kit comes molded in a light gray, the blue and red engine parts are just clear plastic (sadly if you don't have any paint, this kit will stay very bland. =[ ), a BIIIIG sheet of decals, and a VERY nice display stand with a METAL display arm. The plastic is very durable, I've dropped mine a few times now and it still hasn't broken lol Also, YOU WILL NEED GLUE, don't forget it....most of the kit is snap-tight except for the main disk. For the price...this kit is worth every penny.
