Editorial Reviews

About the Artist

Metaphors have been thrown and adjectives created but nothing truly captures Me Talk Pretty’s sound. Attentive listeners will sometimes hear Led Zeppelin in their music, others will recognize the dynamics of Tool and the eccentricity of Bjork. This fusion of musical styles primes Me Talk Pretty for the mainstream. Ana, MTP’s debut EP, contains six tracks of progressive and angular rock and roll. Recorded in only five days, Ana is saturated with a mystical presence, emotive lyrics, and aggressive dynamics. Citing artists such as Incubus, A Perfect Circle, and Bjork as influences, Me Talk Pretty’s aggressive yet fragile sound is truly unique. From the quirky introductory track “Illusion,” to the tension-eliciting track “Measures of Silence,” Me Talk Pretty comes across as a band with tremendous range. “Ana,” the title track to MTP’s EP, boasts an interesting fusion of subtle Middle-Eastern melodies and progressive rock. These nuances are present throughout MTP’s debut, representing the sensibilities of guitarist León Lyazidi and vocalist Julia Preotu. Julia, a recent émigré from Romania and English-speaking neophyte, lyrically explores the insecurities of rediscovering oneself in America. Drummer James Kluz and bassist Chris Foster define and solidly anchor the sound. Ana is the first EP from Me Talk Pretty and the band’s first collaboration with Producer/Engineer Arun Venkatesh (Thursday, Taking Back Sunday, My American Heart) of Big Blue Meenie Studios (NJ) Me Talk Pretty will begin 2006 with a January residency at New York City club Arlene’s Grocery, followed by the self-release of Ana in February. The band then plans to tour vigorously, taking their super-charged live act throughout the Northeast.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just the beginning, December 5, 2006

Ana is simple. It is the band's first attempt at releasing music, and many of the songs are similar. The sound is a bit unpolished at times. If you listened to them live a little while back, you'd have heard better quality live than you get on the album. That said, the music is different from most anything you've heard. It's angry, but refuses to get trapped in angst. It's heavy, but refuses to let that get in the way of melody. It's not composed with traditional rock structures and time signatures, but who needs yet another cookie-cutter rock band?

New material is coming soon, but this album is still worth keeping in your library. Very unique material, and just the beginning. The new bassist is bringing fresh vision and life into the band, along with the inspiration and discipline they gained from touring for the first time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Clear signs that the band has some work to do, January 25, 2006
This review is from: ANA (EP) (Audio CD)
The Good
"Illusion" kicks things off with a blend of distorted riffs and clean tones. Vocalist Julia Preotu's vocals have all the angst of Alanis Morissette and the cutesiness of Bjork. "Letter" more or less matches the arrangement of its predecessor, but has more of a powerful chorus. Me Talk Pretty bring the mood down to mellow in the opening moments of "In My Arms," but its Julia's piecing wails that break the serenity. Guitarist Leon Lyazidi packs multiple riffs into the EP's title track "Ana." I really enjoyed his solo section. "Save Me" boasts a Middle-Eastern tone (as does most of the EP).

The Bad
Julia's accent sometimes gets in the way of her vocals. At times, her intensity surpasses that of the rest of the band as well. The songs tend to sound similar.

The Verdict
This release shows clear signs that the band has some work to do. They sound like they're just starting out, most of the songs sound alike, and it all seems a little rushed. I can understand the fact that they just want to get something out for people to hear. Despite all of that, Me Talk Pretty do have the potential to become more comfortable in their delivery. They have a unique sound, and a vocalist that can belt it out when she needs to.
