5.0 out of 5 stars If you like Lou Diamond, you'll LOVE this movie!
I love westerns and I like Lou Diamond, plus I knew this was a remake of an old John Wayne/Gail Russell movie in the 1940's. I ordered the movie and it arrived within 3 days. The remake was great but not as great as the 1947 movie....back then they did more elaborate scenes outdoors with cattle and horses and wagons and cliffs. This movie just "stayed on the set". But...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a lot of action as expected from the preview
I have never seen the original so I cannot make comparisons. For me, it was slow. There was not enough action and everyone spoke in such low monotones it was frustrating. I watched it on The Hallmark Movie Channel because it DID have Lou Diamond Phillips and I have liked the westerns he has done in the past. The romance part (small that it was) had some tender moments...

The remake was great but not as great as the 1947 movie....back then they did more elaborate scenes outdoors with cattle and horses and wagons and cliffs. This movie just "stayed on the set". But it was still a great movie with a great moral love story between a gunslinger and a young Quaker woman. I'll enjoy watching it over and over.

I watched it on The Hallmark Movie Channel because it DID have Lou Diamond Phillips and I have liked the westerns he has done in the past. The romance part (small that it was) had some tender moments and the two actors did a convincing job of it but there was not enough to the whole movie to want to watch it again.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Subpar Remake, January 5, 2010
This review is from: Angel & The Badman (DVD)
This television remake of a minor 1947 John Wayne western classic not only suffers from the fact that star Lou Diamond Phillips is not the "Duke," but also from a script and direction that is definitely subpar.

Phillips is a good actor, as is his co-star, Deborah Kara Unger, but attempting to step into boots previously worn by a movie icon like Wayne is always a mistake.

The basic story about a wounded gunman who is taken in and reformed by a Quaker family is also viable, but writer Jack Nasser and director Terry Ingram, who shot their picture during a Canadian winter, do not seem to understand the western genre. The dialogue is staid, the pace and action sequences are static and the movie is, frankly, dull.

The DVD contains a "Behind the Scenes" featurette.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great new western for family or date night, November 6, 2009
This review is from: Angel & The Badman (DVD)
This movie has something for all your family and friends. What a great western. I watched it twice when I rented it and knew I'd wind up having to buy it; I just want to share it with everyone I know. Lou Diamond Phillips took my breath away and the ending just slayed me...

3.0 out of 5 stars GOOD FOR A TV REMAKE, August 20, 2010
This review is from: Angel & The Badman (DVD)
ANGEL & THE BADMAN

Yes this is a remake of the John Wayne film with the same name, but this is a made for TV flick. For a made for TV western film it really is not that bad although I will admit I only got it because Lou Diamond Phillips is in the film. In Fact he is the star of the film and it is a good thing because with out him in it I don't know what the film would be like. Still it is a good flick that I would recommend to western movie fans, and of course to Lou fans. Since I am very much a fan of Lou Diamond Phillips I tend to like this flick although it is not a classic.

Quirt Evans [Phillips] is an outlaw who is very much legendary but not enough to not be challenged, in which he does right from the first scene. Although he wins the battle with multiple opponents he still gets shot and is injured. He is found by a family who takes him in and begins to care for him. As he comes alive out of his sleep he awakes to the site of a woman. It is this woman he starts to fall for as she has already had the nurse affect happen to her. That of course is she was taking care of him and fell for him, simple and plain but it has happened.

He is a very selfish and mean spirited person but these people's kindness starts to rub off on him. So much to the point that he starts to adopt their ways slowly and begins to help them out. Like straightening out the townspeople that hate them, oh yeah by the way they are Quakers. Of course there are people out for him from his past and the local sheriff is not happy about him being there. So there are a lot of things going on in the story but some times it does not seem that way.

Written by Jack Nasser and James Edward Grant and directed Terry Ingram this TV remake while a good film is far from a classic. At times the film seems slow and makes you wish they pushed the pace a little. Also I guess going with the slow pace it seems like nothing is happening at times even when there is. The action is very good and so is the acting so I guess that does save it. And to be honest the film is not as bad as I make it sound.

Of course Lou Diamond Phillips is great in the film as is every one else in it, well The Lou is always great so that is no surprise at all. Everyone else is good but Deborah Kara Unger sometimes just seems annoying. Luke Perry is good here as is John Wayne's grandson I believe Brendan Wayne as Lou's friend that comes into town. The town telegraph operator and the sheriff are both great in this flick as well.

For a TV movie this is a good one and I would say I recommend seeing it, but only if you are a western or Lou diamond Phillips fan. It is far from horrible but the action is far apart and you realize it at times. But other than the slow movement the movie is a good one with good performances. Of course anything with the Lou is going to be owned by me, you know that.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cheap Imitation of a Great Movie, March 30, 2010
This review is from: Angel & The Badman (DVD)
When I saw this "redo" dvd of this classic of John Wayne, Harry Carrey and Gail Russell's movie, on the shelf at WalMart, I was so upset that I REFUSED to buy this. FIRST and foremost, WHO could portray John, Harry and a dark haired beauty Gail AND do them justice? I started to watch this when it was on tv the other night. My stomach turned and when I saw a blonde version of Gail's character, I laughed. I laughed even more when I saw Lou in John Waynes character. Lou vs. John? OH PLEASE!! Thank God the following night John's version, the original version, was on tv. THAT one I watched.

How dare Hollywood try to redo ANYTHING that John Wayne or any other great actors orignally did. IT CAN NOT BE DONE>>>>> I recently read that Jeff Bridges and others are going to be redoing "True Grit". ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? I will never support financially anything hollywood will do to disgrace the memory of our great actors. Todays actors are NOT of the same quality of the actors of the past. YOU can NOT redo ANYTHING from our great former actors and call it good. It simply is not good.

Do not waste your time with this. You want to see Angel and the Badman? Watch John Wayne's movie. THEN you will see the TRUE version not the imitation of a great movie.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst acting, March 27, 2010
This review is from: Angel & The Badman (DVD)
The acting in this movie was the worst I have ever seen. Even pornographic movies take more time and effort into their acting abilities. The horses were the best actors throughout. On the cover it said something about gunslinging that would compare to that of 3:10 to Yuma. There was absolutely no gunslinging scenes in the movie. And last but not least, Lou Diamond Phillips and Luke Perry were in this....need I say more! Don't waste your time or your money.
