I absolutely hate to give 1 star for packaging, especially since AO Smith has such a good reputation.

But ...

Please believe me when I tell you that these should only be shipped from the factory 4 per pallet, via freight truck with a very cautious driver. As of last weekend, they were not being packaged for individual shipment and their thin sheet metal skin cannot survive UPS's or FedEx's normal handling methods.

There is zero protection inside the box. No foam sheets/wrap, bubble wrap, foam peanuts, heavy cardboard, nothing. I don't think the manufacturer had any idea Amazon would be shipping these individually. The box may keep it safe from dust and scratches during retail storage, but that's it. I normally enjoy UPS or FedEx shipping with Amazon Prime 2nd day free, but it wasn't a good idea for this purchase. I'd seen the previous review stating the same thing, but had hoped it was an isolated incident.

Our water heater appeared to have been in a very serious accident of some sort. Ironically, the box showed only a couple of small tears and most of the damage to the water heater was beneath undamaged cardboard.

I'm disappointed that this didn't work out as it is a quality water heater at a very good price. I suppose we'll be purchasing locally now, which means more $$$ for a lower-quality heater (whatever brand our plumber carries).

I work for a.o smith. It takes a lot of work to build these and 99% of the time they're defective the supervisor passes it for shipment. I run between 1100 and 2500 a normal day (9 hours) and I'd say between 300 and 800 are defective.

I did my research before purchasing this product. A O Smith is rated higher than other water heaters that is the reason I purchased this item. Unfortunately, I never considered that a good product needs good packaging to make it to its destination.
I am extremely dissatisfied with the poor packaging they use to deliver such big and somewhat heavy item. They only use a simple box and nothing to protect it. Because of this poor packaging, there was severe damage to the water heater when it was delivered. My old 15 year old heater looks better than the new one. It is damaged on top, bottom and middle...everywhere is banged up like someone dropped it many times. A O Smith should consider spending 5.00-10.00 dollars more to purchase bubble wrap or something to protect it if any delivery person drops it un-intentionally.
I hope someone at A O Smith co reads these comments and they agree with me and do something about it. This will prevent client dissatisfaction.

Signed.
Unhappy client.

Do not buy an AO Smith water heater. Our AO Smith just broke and leaked all over our basement.
The whole mess is going to cost us more than 2 grand. Buyer beware, A.O. Smith is not a good product.

UPS damaged the water heater and I had to return it to Amazon. Amazon needs to improve the packing (maybe stripe the water heater onto a pallet) UPS dents the water heater badly. What a waste.
