I have installed a vertex water heater for both radiant heat and domestic hot water in my 1500 sqft house in cold New England. That model was recommended as perfect for the demand of radiant heat. When it works, it has provided us with great heat and abundant hot water.
Problem is, I have had to replace the whole burner unit 2 years ago -emergency repair had to be done right away in the winter. A month ago, I had an air pressure fault and found out that it was caused by a cheap 90* plastic connector that had cracked on the blower -emergency repair had to be done right away in the winter. Finally this morning there was a large puddle in my basement because the glass lining of the water heater has cracked -it'd about 24*F outside and we are expecting a blizzard tomorrow!!
Even if the warranty works, I do not want another a0 smith water heater in my house. I have spent enough money in plumber hours and time lost from work because of this poorly made heater.

I bought Brand new GDHE50 NG, installed by AO Smith trained plumber.
It failed twice in the last two months. the Electronics on this Heater is very delicate; Every time Power Company do the Maintenance, Heater Circuit board fails and Heater stop working. We have to take cold showers for 5 days.
AO smith Technical Support trying to blame the Technician and my house wiring; I have 6 computers and other sophisticated electronics in the house without any problem.

Regret paying Top Dollars for this Shit. Strongly discourage to buy this Model.

Good Water Heater when it works. Came defective from the factory. AO Smith could not get a factory authorized repairman out for 2 weeks, so they told us to get someone and they would pay. Big Joke. After months I finally wrestled about 1/3 of the warrantee repair bill from them.
Fast Forward One Year - Broke again, same problem. Of course the warrantee on any labor was over and only parts were warranteed. Note, it is winter and we have to go to the gym to shower. They said they would overnight air the part. Well they sent it UPS GROUND. So another week without hot water.
When the second problem showed up they tried everything they could to blame me for the problem. They said the water heater needed a dedicated circuit. Well that pretty much limits its use to new construction. How are you going to run a dedicated circuit in a home if you are just replacing the water heater. Then they said I had to have a surge protector on the plug to the water heater. All the time the water heater is only working a little of the time.
AO Smith, it is time you took responsibility for you products.

I installed the AO Smith Vertex 100 (NG) a week ago, and so far, I am impressed. I previously had two conventional 50-gal gas water heaters, installed 18 years ago (yes they lasted that long, amazingly). The old units were plumbed in series, 40,000 BTU each and probably 62% efficient when they were *new* (and certainly much less than that after 18 years of tank scale build up, etc). With a total of 100 gals of water in storage and 80,000 btu total, these produced adequate hot water for the whirlpool bath (80 gals) and for multiple showers, dishwasher, etc, although they would still run out of hot water eventually and a fairly lengthy wait was required for them to recover.

I looked at various tankless models, and "hybrid" models (such as the Eternal by Grandview), but there were always issues, such as "cold water sandwich", performance with very cold incoming water, or just poor reliability. I know that the 3 existing reviews here on Amazon for the Vertex are not good, however of the more than *93* reviews on the site where I purchased mine, almost all of them were excellent and 5-stars.

My local gas company was also offering a $500 rebate on this unit ("condensing gas storage water heater > 95% efficiency) so I decided to go ahead. Installing the unit was pretty straightforward. First I called the gas company to see if I had enough BTU from the meter to run everything (this was when I was thinking of going with tankless, which required 199,000 BTU). They said I was borderline and should probably upgrade the meter. I was prepared to hear $$$, but it turns out this was a totally free service from my gas company.

I also ordered the concentric vent kit, but ended up not using it and used conventional 2" PVC intake and exhaust instead.
