Product Description

Manufacturer's Notice

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), American Power Conversion Corporation (APC), of West Kingston, R.I., is voluntarily recalling about 900,000 back-up power supply devices. These devices are primarily used to protect computers in case of a power failure. The power supply device can fail, causing the unit to overheat, which may pose a fire hazard to consumers. APC has received six reports of units overheating resulting in the melting of the unit's outer casing and three reports of minor property damage. No injuries have been reported. The recalled Back-UPS® CS Uninterruptible Power Supply devices include the Back-UPS CS350 and the Back-UPS CS 500 models. The model number can be found on the front of the unit, along with the words, "Back-UPS CS" and "APC." In addition, one of the following numbers shows up on the bar code label located on the bottom of the unit: BK350, BK500, BK500BLK. The recalled power supply devices also have one of the following serial numbers - AB0048 through AB0251, BB0104 through BB0251, and JB0125 through JB0251 - which can be found on the bottom of the unit. Units with an "R" at the end of the serial number within the above ranges are not part of this recall. Retailers, computer and electrical distributors, and catalogs nationwide sold the power supply devices from November 2000 through December 2002 for between $70 and $130.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive and Must Have, January 19, 2004

I purchased the BK350 after looking for an inexpensive UPS. This UPS was the least expensive UPS I found that didn't look like a mutated power strip. It will filter line voltages, intercept transient spikes, and kick in when power drops below a certain level.

Works well, and has already saved me from a few unexpected crashes. At power loss, it will keep my workstation running for about three (3) minutes, just enough to cleanly shutdown.

Note, that the APC UPSes tend to be pricier, but I've never had a problem with any of their UPS products. Battery replacement is painless and easy.

Recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Protection - APC will Protect, September 8, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: APC BK350 350VA UPS System (Electronics)
I bought this to replace a similar APC unit I had run 24 horus a day for over 4 years. I would highly reccomend this unit to anyone wanting protection as well as some backup power for a few minutes. I have not had an incident such as the one person to review here, but his review was not even on this product. I have used APC for years, including over 50 of them at work, and have never had a problem with protection. I reccomend APC for anyone needing power protection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Little UPS, January 9, 2008

Be sure to properly size this UPS according to the APC website. This their smallest UPS of this design and may not be adequate for larger systems.

Mine is perfect for its intended purpose. I have an Apple iMac G4 on UPS and a laser printer on surge protection. It has more than adequate time on UPS before shutdown.

I take advantage of the Apple OS X built-in software which gives great flexibility. Do not use the manufacturer furnished PowerChute software. You will have two conflicting automatic shutdown programs running at the same time.
