This little thing saved the day...,
This review is from: APC PNET1GB ProtectNet Standalone Surge Protector for 10/100/1000 Base - T Ethernet Lines (Electronics)
In my case, my client had lightning strike and lost a CableModem, Router ans Switch, so the first Protectnet was installed when everything was reinstalled. After a year and half some builidng constructions in the area forced the relocation of the ISP cable from the street pole to the building and someone make a mistake... a windy afternoon and the cable fly up and touched live electricity lines and then the poor cablemodem was a christmas tree full of light inside, this time the PROTECTNET didnt let the problem scale further (some believe this time it could have reached the workstations, but definitively could hve reached the server and destroy the precious data), story short, the Protectnet was left unrecognizable by his mother, but was the only expense for the client (cablemodem is ISP provided); and now we ordered 2! :D

I hope I never have a situation where I can write a review on the effectiveness of a surge protector, but I wanted to comment that the package DOES INCLUDE a CAT5 jumper cable that is approximately 2 inches long. I ordered one separately because the Amazon description did not indicate that the surge protector came with a patch or jumper cable that is necessary to install it.

While it's not what I would call "industrial grade", it also doesn't cost $100 or more per device. I just installed two of them on either end of a 270' run of Cat5e between buildings, and the connection supports Gigabit at full speeds (2ms ping on 65000-byte packet, 1ms on 50000). Link was down after a weekend storm came through, simply unplugged/replugged the patch cords at both ends and it came back to life. At under $30 each, it doesn't make sense not to have them. Only thing is you do have to attach the grounding wire to an existing earth ground (look for one provided by phone or cable service) or use an adapter to hook it into the grounding post on your nearest electrical outlet.
