2.0 out of 5 stars Failed to protect equipment
Con: The APC Protect Net failed to protect my equipment from a powerful surge caused by lightning. APC warranty covers the unit itself, but none of the "Protected" equipment. The D-Link Router, 2 D- Link network switches, and not completly sure about all the rest of my network until the router is replaced.

Pros: The surge did "Blow" the APC Protect net,...

This review is from: APC PNET1GB ProtectNet Standalone Surge Protector for 10/100/1000 Base - T Ethernet Lines (Electronics)
In my case, my client had lightning strike and lost a CableModem, Router ans Switch, so the first Protectnet was installed when everything was reinstalled. After a year and half some builidng constructions in the area forced the relocation of the ISP cable from the street pole to the building and someone make a mistake... a windy afternoon and the cable fly up and touched live electricity lines and then the poor cablemodem was a christmas tree full of light inside, this time the PROTECTNET didnt let the problem scale further (some believe this time it could have reached the workstations, but definitively could hve reached the server and destroy the precious data), story short, the Protectnet was left unrecognizable by his mother, but was the only expense for the client (cablemodem is ISP provided); and now we ordered 2! :D

4.0 out of 5 stars Included CAT5 Jumper Cable, September 28, 2010

I hope I never have a situation where I can write a review on the effectiveness of a surge protector, but I wanted to comment that the package DOES INCLUDE a CAT5 jumper cable that is approximately 2 inches long. I ordered one separately because the Amazon description did not indicate that the surge protector came with a patch or jumper cable that is necessary to install it.

5.0 out of 5 stars decent protection on a budget, September 18, 2009

While it's not what I would call "industrial grade", it also doesn't cost $100 or more per device. I just installed two of them on either end of a 270' run of Cat5e between buildings, and the connection supports Gigabit at full speeds (2ms ping on 65000-byte packet, 1ms on 50000). Link was down after a weekend storm came through, simply unplugged/replugged the patch cords at both ends and it came back to life. At under $30 each, it doesn't make sense not to have them. Only thing is you do have to attach the grounding wire to an existing earth ground (look for one provided by phone or cable service) or use an adapter to hook it into the grounding post on your nearest electrical outlet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Protect Your Wireless Router, May 8, 2010

We were replacing wireless routers frequently before installing this product on the cat 5 cable. We have a DSL line referred to as "fiber on the curb". The modem is not in the house. This product connects at the wall outlet with a small cat5 cable. Then you attach a ground wire to the ground in the wall outlet. Then plug your cat5 cable from the router into it. We have had no problems with our routers or connection since installing this product. It is great!

5.0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY WORKS!, September 20, 2010

I bought one of these a few months ago, upgrading from the old 10mbs version I have. I usually unplug my cable modem from the coax when leaving for a long stretch of time and thunderstorms are forecast. This time my daughter decided to hop on the network and reconnect the modem that afternoon before one of the worst thunderstorms we've had here in 10+ years. Long story short - cable modem FRIED from near-direct lightning strike, but my router, voip ata, and computer (which all sits on another APC surge strip) went completely unscathed.

Not only do I own this product, but can vouch that it works - like it SHOULD. Many other products out there really don't have what it takes under the hood to repel surges and strikes, instead relying on inconvenient insurance policies "stickered" onto cheap products. The point is to PROTECT, not INSURE. If you want an insurance policy, go to your local big-box store and get a regular $3 power strip then go to your insurance agent and schedule out a insurance policy. If you want to PROTECT your equipment... buy this.

This replaced a 10/100 MBps APC surge suppressor when the network went to 1000 MBps, works well :-)

got this to protect my newly run cat 6 gigabit ethernet wired system that runs throughout my house. it installs easy, but, i wish the instructions were a bit more on the easy side; i can see where folks who are not in the know might have trouble as i had to read it twice to make sure i understood. it caused no slow down on network traffic at all; internet speeds were still as fast as ever. i have piece of mind now for my system. i highly recommend this to anyone. i would also tell you how important it is to properly ground the device as listed.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lifetime warranty useless, November 14, 2011

This review is from: APC PNET1GB ProtectNet Standalone Surge Protector for 10/100/1000 Base - T Ethernet Lines (Electronics)
I purchased 3 network surge protectors from APC with a lifetime warranty and after about 4 months one stopped working. I had it properly grounded but a surge came through the line and burnt out a switch. Thankfully it didn't travel any further in my network. I contacted APC to obtain an exchange an they were very friendly and told me that I would receive one in 5 to 7 days. Great! I was ready to hop on Amazon to order another 3 despite having the surge frying my switch that was located after the properly grounded network surge protector. I decided to wait until I received the replacement before placing my order. Well, I'm glad I did! After 4 months of calling them about every 2 weeks I get the same story,... The product isn't in stock, then they give me a date about 2 weeks out when it will be shipped. In 2 weeks it's the same story! It has been over 4 months at this point! Next call December 2nd! I will never purchase another APC product!

Pros: The surge did "Blow" the APC Protect net, and the surge damage seems to be limited. APC is sending a new replacement for the APC Protect Net. The AT@T junction box 5 feet outside the room was exploded into pieces from the surge. My computers seem unaffected.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Surge Protection, January 21, 2011

As the owner of a nation-wide technical support and computer installation business, I set up a lot of servers and networking equipment. I always specify this part with each server - purchase one for the incoming network line into your LAN to protect the switches and routers, and get another for the server. Always buy this product!
