I have five APC UPS units, two of the SUA750's. They work perfectly - I've never lost power to my computer in five years, despite my power company's repeated best efforts! It switches quickly under power loss -your computer will never know what happened. The unit tests the battery every two weeks, even if you don't want it to. Good insurance, but the downside is the battery will fail after about three years. A new battery is $50, so that's $17 a year - cheap insurance. Buy one, or several.

I have two of these at the moment, have owned for at least four years. This is (to my knowledge) the lowest cost UPS that provides a sine-wave output.

Also, your BSD machines can interface to the serial port via apc-upsd. I presume Linux has a solution as well.

The number of power outages I've encountered over the years have more than paid for this UPS! This is better than car insurance; spend the money on this excellent quality UPS and you will not regret it.

This unit works great with my new PC. Several other UPS units like the 1100 APC UPS would not work. Dell tells me that this is one of the few units that works with my new Studio XPS 9000.

Pressed by Amazon to provide a review, I do so with some trepidation. UPS devices are invisible in practice when they work, and you notice them only when they don't.

This unit has been in service for six months, during which time i have had several short power outages that my computers didn't notice -- precisely the point of a UPS.

If you are an obsessive-compulsive sort who insists on trying to notice whether your UPS is working, the electronic display on the front is handy.

Advice to prospective purchasers: buy more capacity than you think you need. Remember that these devices are intended to protect you from reasonable worst case conditions. So use reasonable worst case conditions for deciding what capacity you need.

I have had my APC SmartUPS SUA750 since February 2005.

It's the "real deal", not one of those cheap knockoffs that promise reliability but fail anyway. I needed reliability, so I went for a premium product from APC.

The SUA 750 has never let my computer, modem or router miss a beat in all of that time regardless of utility power blinks or outages.

The battery had just failed recently, which means that it lasted for 4 years and 10 months! It didn't drop the load, but simply warned me and went onto utility power. I ordered a replacement battery for $50 and it's a snap to install.

Great, quality product and highly recommended.

We have an SUA750 at work so I looked at its waveform output (using an oscilloscope) with a desktop computer and LCD monitor running from the backup. When I disconnected the SUA750 from the power grid and it switched to battery, it did NOT provide a perfect sine wave output. The crests and troughs were flattened for approx. 10% of the voltage amplitude (top and bottom each). Along with the flattening there was a small ripple on the leading edges. If APC is going to charge a premium for SmartUPS's they should step up the quality of the output. I can remember a time when the original BackUPS and SmartUPS's produced good sine waves when on battery and were worth the extra cost.

I bought this unit to back up my Dell Studio XPS which will only function with a pure sine wave power supply. I have been very pleased with this product.

Noticed in one of the battery replacement comments (looks to be a rbc48) that UPS batteries have a fairly short lifetime these days. And low and behold, I bought this unit (SUA750) new in Oct 2008, and now the battery is in need of replacement as of last night (May 2010). Used for the ancient telephone answering machine and an iMac, once in a while plug in a disk drive or some such thing for very brief periods of time. Fairly light duty. Power outages every once in a while (a few times a year), but don't recall any long ones (over a couple hours long) since owning this, and tend to turn it off after a bit if the power takes a while to come back on. So just a little bit over a year and a half and it needs a new battery. Rather disappointing.

This is the second APC unit that I own. It is heavy, solidly built, and reliable. Highly recommended.
