The title says it all. It's simple. It's study. It works. The birds appreciate getting their morning drinks and baths from our backyard fountain.

Before installing the unit, I wanted to make sure it would not waste electricity by keeping the water unnecessarily warm. Sitting in a bowl of cold water with some ice added the header did not function. With most of the water poured off and more ice added it went to work. Perfect!

Just wanted to let you know that I bought this 10/2004 and it is now 04/2013 and it still works great same as the day purchased. 8 years later -- actually 8 winter seasons later -- it is reliable and just works and never have to worry about it. I get it out in October and leave it in the birdbath all winter long and take it out in April to put it away for the summer. It gets banged around a lot too as I am not very careful with it when I take it out to dump out the dirty birdbath water and rinse it off to start with fresh water. Doesn't fall out/off (even without the clamp) but I do put a decorative rock on top, doesn't bother the birds at all, haven't had any lime buildup but it does get icky/slimy from bird goo which I just rinse off. I do unscrew it after the season so I can scrub it down well with an old brush before putting the screw back in and then storing it back inside the original box. One side of the metal part has discolored to a yellowish/brown in a few spots, just like an old skillet due to heat.

I live in zone 8. I have a small 2-tier water fountain that the birds take baths in. Even with the fountain running all the time, the heater was able to keep the water at the correct temperature. The water ran freely all winter, and I didn't really notice a higher electrical bill. The birds really appreciated having running water in the fountain when the regular bird bath froze over.

The only downside to this product is that the rounded top edge of my concrete fountain didn't allow the cord stabilizer to get a firm grip. The birds kept landing on the metal bracket and dislodging it. I ended up putting a small rock on the heater to keep it firmly at the bottom of my concrete fountain. If you have a pail with a straight side, the bracket should work just fine.

It was a good purchase.

We're having a cold spell here in the Northeast US. It hasn't gotten above freezing for a week now and my chickens' water froze. We have a 5 gallon home depot bucket suspended in their coop with chicken nipples at the bottom for them to drink out of. We'd tried an aquarium heater but it wasn't strong enough. This has done the trick so far! Its only been running for the day, but it melted the ice that was on the top. Seems to be doing the trick!

I and my birds love the fact that they can have water even if everything else is frozen. Buy it!

Never had a problem with this heater. Read the instructions, protect the plug from moisture and you should be fine. Never had an ice issue or breakers blowing. Refilled the bird bath every 2 to 3 days due to evaporation.

If you go out of town for more then a couple days, unplug, pull out of the water and empty the bird bath because the water will probably evaporate and leave the heater exposed to open air and that would not be good.

Took it out of the bird bath for the season, dried it and wiped it off and put it back in the box it came in. Looks like new I don't think I'll have issues with it next winter.

I use it to keep the ice out of the watering pail for my chickens. It works good to keep the ice away, but if you let the water level drop down and the unit runs out of water, this heater will fry itself trying to heat the air. I had it happen twice to me already had to return it.
