Poor musicians? I don't THINK so!!!,
This review is from: THE APRIL WINE COLLECTION (4 cd box set) (Audio CD)
I became a fan of April Wine just about instantly, being a teenager in 1972 the first time I heard "You Could Have been a Lady" courtesy WKBW in Buffalo which reached half the States and Canada. I had to find out what this band was all about, and at long last, in 2001 I finally got to see them play live, long after they'd broken up once and reunited...they played songs from every part of their tenure as one of Montreal's finest bands and didn't disappoint anyone at all (some folks came from Boston to see them in Burlington VT)...I never thought of Myles goodwyn and company as "poor musicians", not even remotely. Songs like Sign of the Gypsy Queen, Babes in Arms, Forever for Now, Drop Your Guns, Oowatanite, Victim For Your Love (and I could go on and on) to me don't sound like poor musicians but a bunch of guys who are just as good at the heavy stuff and the ballads. If the reviwer calling them poor musicians is trying to compare them to Rush or someone like that...I'll take April Wine hands down. None of the seemingly constant tempo changes and a voice I can listen to for a lot longer than Geddy Lee's. Don't get me wrong, it takes talent to do what Rush does on a technical basis...but for pure rock & roll enjoyment, April Wine has a lot more great tunes than a lot of people realize. I for one am very glad they decided to get back together, and not just one or two original members with four other guys you've never heard of. They've stayed true to the band and the sound. The recent material is just fine too...this collection covers all of the first Wine era through the mid-80s. Fine Wine indeed!

Like Chris Jordan said in his review, this is indeed a remaster. I'm sure there are other AW fans who were or are curious as to whether this is a remaster or just a recycled release. This is a release by Unidisc and the sound is good. I'm only halfway through listening to this as I type and I love each and every bit of this collection.

Good Anthology of a Very Good Band,

First let me say you can get this same Box Set for $50 on on other sites,I have the original release on Aquaries Records and it has a good mix of songs through out the Wines career.
Bad musicians, somebody is just not a AW fan so it's easy to say that I guess. These guys wrote some great songs over there career and are still out there playing, and playing well.I seen them earlier this year and they put on a great show.It was short because of the venue being stupid with some kind of silliness that I was told about. I seen them open for Rush in 79 and seen them about 6 more times since then and everytime the put on a great show. I would say this set is probably for the avid AW fan though, unless you want to really get to hear what some of there early tunes were like and hear some unreleased Live classic tunes.

ok , this is a great one for casual fans who want all the hits and more. For completists like me the only reason to get this was a few b-sides and the live 'one for the road' which now is out as a single release with bonus tracks.
If you don't care to buy all the music of this fine group then this one is for you completely. It's got all the best songs and lots of tight playing and singing from the boys. IT's a compilation four disc special with one live cd among them. That was the 'one for the road' and some tracks from 'live' etc. Both of which are now out on single discs. I would say that this is well worth it and I still own it even though I bought the rest of the catalog.

SEVERAL MONTHS AGO, THIS SET LISTED AT $ 19.99 AND I ORDERED IT, BUT WAS TOLD IT WAS BACK ORDERED AND IT WOULD BE FILLED AS SOON AS MORE CAME IN. AFTER WAITING MORE THAN THREE MONTHS, I WAS TOLD IT WAS NOW OUT OF STOCK. HOW CONVENIENT. SUDDENLY, IT'S BACK UP FOR SALE AND THE PRICE IS INFLATED TO 4 TIMES THE ORGINAL LISTED PRICE. WHY NOT HONOR THE ORIGINAL PRICE I BOUGHT IT AT? BUYER BEWARE, ITS A SHELL GAME. P,S. APRIL WINE ROCKS!

They make awsome songs BUT ARE PRETTY POOR MUSICIANS. Stick on your albums and don't go to their concerts as won't see them the same way after. They sound great in concert but who needs 3 guitarists to make so few notes??? They just don't know how to play guitar.Favorite song: "Weeping widow" not even one of their composition!! |
