Book Description

June 1, 1997
The first comprehensive reference book with all anabantoid fishes on 650 full color photographs. Plus all snakeheads, nandids, and related families that show many behavioral parallels to labyrinths or anabantoids. Further, this book provides a determination key to the genera Betta. This book became immediately the No. 1 identification lexicon of Betta societies the world over! All AQUALOG -reference books introduce each fish (incl. breeding forms etc.)with at least one color photo and a short description. The ingenious code number system labels every known or newly discovered fish with an individual code number. This number re mains, despite any scientific renaming. Moreover, it enables you to communicate internationally about any fish without the danger of confusion regarding local names! Your AQUALOG -reference book always stays up-to-date! All newly discovered or bred species are regularly published as supplements or so-called "stickups" in our AQUALOGnews. These stickers can be attached to the empty pages at the end of your book. If you want more information about these interesting fishes, you'll find it in our AQUALOG -Special: "Anabantoids" (ISBN 393170206-5)

When it comes to infomration and classifcation of labyrints, like bettas and guramies. There is only one book that is good enought. This one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, but needs a revised version, October 10, 2010
This review is from: AQUALOG All Labyrinths - Bettas, Gouramis, Snakeheads and Nandids (English and German Edition) (Paperback)
Great book, great reference. It was almost perfect back in 1997 when it was published. But since then, many things have changed. Lots of new species were discovered and described, and these new species are of course missing. Many names have been changed. You will find Colisa lalia and Trichogaster trichopterus there, not Trichogaster lalius and Trichopodus trichopterus. All bush fishes are in the genus Ctenopoma (no Microctenopoma), all snakeheads are in the genus Channa (no Parachanna). Some names which are now considered invalid are used. Some now available species (such as Betta channoides) are shown only as dead, preserved specimens. And so on...

Some of these problems may be solved by the promised supplements, which should be added to the book. But as far as I now, only two supplements were published for this book, and even these are not easily available. A revised edition of the book would be much better, but as the publisher seems to be almost dead now, it is not likely to happen in the near future.
