Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Authors of the book Arc Marine discuss results of a successful effort to create and define a data model for academic, government, military, and private oceanographers, resource managers, conservationists, geographers, nautical archaeologists, and analysts and managers of marine applications. Arc Marine is the perfect starting point for the intermediate marine student as well as a resource for the marine GIS expert. At a time when health of our oceans is seen as crucial to our existence, marine researchers have developed a data model that supports sea floor mapping, fisheries management, marine mammal tracking, monitoring shoreline change, and water temperature analysis. This book enables marine professionals to do better work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A detailed, no-nonsense discussion of an invaluable scientific tool, January 4, 2008
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews

Assembled by expert researchers, Arc Marine: GIS for a Blue Planet is an advanced guide to working with marine research data in a geographic information system (GIS) using a new geodatabase model. Intended especially for oceanographers, fishery managers, and other marine scientists and researchers, Arc Marine explains its standardized marine data model (named "Arc Marine", hence the book's title) for ESRI's ArcGIS software. Chapters walk the reader through how to use the data structure to craft research results that lend themselves to quick and easy integration and collaboration with the work of other researchers. Full-color illustrations, including numerous computer screenshots, enhance Arc Marine. A detailed, no-nonsense discussion of an invaluable scientific tool, highly recommended for professionals in the field.
