I'm self-proclaimed "Math Stupid." It had been nearly 5 years since my last basic algebra course and I had forgotten it all, so I purchassed this book in order to "relearn all my math" for the GRE. I gave myself roughly a month to steadily work through the book's sections and practice questions...and walked away with a great understanding and ability. I even learned things that didn't make sense to me throughout highschool or college. The format of this GRE/GMAT math review is very easy to follow. It gradually builds on itself and has fantastic, clear, easy-to-understand explanations. There are also several full-length practice tests. If you need to relearn your math/algebra/geometry for the GRE or GMAT, do not rely on the brief math reviews in general study guides: the ARCO GRE/GMAT Math Review will start you from scratch and, before you know it, you will know what you're doing! (I scored higher on math than verbal because of this book...and I have an English degree!!)

Higher Scores Made Easy!!,

This review is from: ARCO GRE/GMAT Math Review 6th Edition (Gre Gmat Math Review) (Paperback)
I bought this book about 3.5 weeks before I took the GRE. I knew my math skills were weak and I was looking for a review book that would start from the basics and work its way into the more challenging material. That is exactly what this book did! It starts by teaching you the fundamentals of algebra and then proceeds to word problems, geometry, and then includes a special chapter/practice section of the GRE quantitative comparisons ---a real helper. Included in this book is tons of practice problems to help you gain the skills you need to pass the GRE. I went from scoring in the 400s to a score of 650 on the actual test. And that was just with 3 weeks of practice. I thank the authors for producing such a comprehensive and compatable review book.

The Right Help at Last!,

This review is from: ARCO GRE/GMAT Math Review 6th Edition (Gre Gmat Math Review) (Paperback)
This book was a great help for my son who was preparing for his GRE. The algebra and word problem sections were especially helpful. Being a little fearful of math in general, he accepted the book reluctantly but his test score improved dramatically and he's now on the way to grad school! It was a great investment.

This guide helped bring my score up. There are some things I really liked about it and some things I really hated about itLiked- Started at the very basics and worked your way up. Disliked- Didn't explain all of the problems. If you got them wrong you had to figure why yourself (typical math book skipping steps) and there were a lot of mistakes in the book Overall, if you have forgotten everything you learned in 7th and 8th grade math get this guide it will really help you prepare for the GRE's

Does not go far enough,
By Blazorge (Brooklyn, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: ARCO GRE/GMAT Math Review 6th Edition (Gre Gmat Math Review) (Paperback)
This might be my first online book review ever but I wanted to share my experience with this book. Preparing for the GRE is an extremely important thing to do well so these reviews are where a lot of people, including myself who happen to not be in a position to spend thousands of dollars on classes and tutoring, turn for indications of the quality of these test prep books.I was a horrible math student in High School and going to Grad. School more than fifteen years after completing my undergrad education where math was not a huge part of the program (I am a musician) meant that I pretty much had to start over from scratch with math to prepare for the GRE. Now, I will say that this book was good at taking things from the beginning and I did score much better than I would have had I not prepared at all. Basically, I went through this book three times cover to cover to prepare for the Math portion of the test. However I just took the GRE (November 2009) and found that at least a quarter of the questions I was given were of a kind the likes of which I had never seen before. Questions involving stuff not covered at all in this book. I think that this book just didn't get advanced enough to prepare adequately the GRE. I'm happy that thanks to some lucky guesses I was able to score in the 73 percentile on the test (which is what I was hoping for) but if you are looking to score really highly on the Math portion of the GRE than my advice for you is to look elsewhere. One final thing that I'd like to add about this book is that it had a lot of typos. I guess that if you understand the material enough to catch the typos than you're doing well but it's still frustrating and doesn't inspire confidence in the idea that this is a good use of your time studying for such an important test. Best of luck to you all with you GRE exams!

The Perfect Review,
By S "idea seeker" (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: ARCO GRE/GMAT Math Review 6th Edition (Gre Gmat Math Review) (Paperback)
I have been doing math continuously in college, but even then, I could not remember how to do the basics required of the GRE. This book was a perfect way to get reacquainted with the technical minutia, and even if I knew it, the book gave me the practice I needed to do the math quickly and efficiently. I would highly recommend this as a refresher, but it is too easy as a primary course of study for the quantitative section. The best part is all the problems are explained in detail, so one can simply follow along. THe entire book took me a week to do, and it was definitely worth purchasing along with another GRE book. Although the other books go through reviews as well, they just teach you the questions on the test. However, you won't get them if you can't manipulate numbers quickly enough, and thereby you won't have the ability to go through the more diffcult questions.

Too general to help on the GRE.,
By Dr Bernal "unbiased opinion" (Washington DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: ARCO GRE/GMAT Math Review 6th Edition (Gre Gmat Math Review) (Paperback)
This book does a good job of teaching you basic math. It does help if you want to relearn math from scratch with progressive difficulty. It does not however help to prepare you specifically for the math questions encountered on the GRE. The practice questions in the book do a poor job of emulating GRE math questions which are not straight forward. I did every practice question in the book over three months and raised my quantitative score marginally. I studied a math review from a major test prep company and saw a much more appreciable gain using their specific advice. Using this book ended up being a tremendous waste of my financial resources and time. This book is a good math review but poor test prep - avoid it.

It is a good math review book but not sufficient in itself for getting ready for the GMAT or GRE. The problem explanations are very good. I recommend it if you are weak in math and need to brush up. Barron's prep courses for the GMAT/GRE are better but if you are weak in math, this book is a better place to start before moving on to other prep courses such as Barron's.

Excellent review of basic concepts and some medium difficulty problems,
This review is from: ARCO GRE/GMAT Math Review 6th Edition (Gre Gmat Math Review) (Paperback)
I bought this book as a refresher for a math exam I will be taking in about a month. It starts you off with "simpler" topics and moves onto topics which require more calculations and maybe two or three steps to solve.Overall, a great review book. I will keep this book (and not resell it, lol) because I feel, in the future, if I ever need a refresher, this book will be it. Although this book does not cover other topics (combinations / permutations), it is still a good resource to refresh your memory. I think that proper exam preparation requires far more than a single resource. This is a good book to give you the fundamentals but you preparation should definitely consist of more than one review guide and certainly a ton of other resources for "reputable" problems - not simple ones, etc.
