Book Description

November 10, 2004
My husband Ted and I were married in Owen Sound, Ontario in June of 1975. Two months later we had everything we owned packed, and were on our way to British Columbia. Having spent much of my youth as the daughter of missionarys living in remote areas of Northern British Columbia and at times in Ontario, returning to British Columbia would be a welcome homecoming for me. In the years since I had left this amazingly beautiful country I had never lost my yearning to return to it. Ted on the other hand, was born and raised in Ontario, and had never been to British Columbia. As an avid outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman, he could hardly wait. Although having been raised in a fairly large town, we had no fear that Ted would have any trouble adjusting to the lifestyle we had chosen for our future. Our intentions were to head as far North in British Columbia as we could make it before our funds ran out, then, we would settle down and start our new life together. Due to a car accident and the Insurance Company of British Columbia being on strike, Kamloops, a thriving cattle town in British Columbia?s interior was as far as we were able to go. We were devastated with this turn of events and had no choice but to make the best of our situation. Needing work, Ted took many jobs over the next few years to make ends meet. These jobs included working in a sporting goods distributorship, the peat moss bogs of Alberta, the oil rigs in Northern Alberta and a plywood plant in central British Columbia. I took many small Jobs during this time to help meet expenses and to try and save some money. Not once during this time did our dreams of moving north fade. Now, five and a half years, two provinces, and many small towns later, we were once again ready to head North. This time we had a destination in mind. Atlin, the last utopia, the Switzerland of the north would be our home for the next nine years. This is the story of two green horns with a dream. The story of a woman?s view of survival in the wilderness; from building our first log cabin together and living off of the land, to a winter spent on a trap line in a cabin built in the late 1800?s and originally used as a line cabin when the historic telegraph trail was being pushed through this area. This story tells of big game hunters in remote wilderness camps and pack strings of horses that were often our only means of transportation. It is the story of how we learned to survive the challenges of every day living in the North and grew to love the simple things in life. How, by experiencing this lifestyle, we developed a special bond of closeness that grew from a total reliance on each other for day to day survival until we became not only husband and wife but each other?s constant companion and best friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stark, poetic honesty, February 16, 2006
By

This review is from: ARE WE HAVING FUN YET? (Paperback)
What differentiates Bonnie Traplin's memoir of her years spent in the pristine backcountry of the Yukon is her uncompromising honesty. In fact, most of the book is relayed in actual letters to her mother, hyphenated by Bonnie's commentary, further descriptive passages, and significant future events relative to the text. She has a simple, straight forward way of relaying her personal history without embellishing in a grandiose fashion so common to personal memoirs. In fact, Bonnie doesn't really have a need to embellish as her story is indeed larger than life in many ways.

When Bonnie and her husband first moved to the north, they were greenhorns, which helps the reader to relate to their trials and tribulations as if they were the reader's own. In terms of Bonnie's honesty, she is brutally humble about her own abilities, often highlighting her clumsiness, which is a hoot, and her fears. She also offers exquisite descriptions of the virgin timber mountains and the beauty of the wildlife, so much so that she even makes this Florida girl yearn to be in below zero degree weather!

All in all, this was a quickly devoured book that I would recommend to anyone, especially anyone with experience or at least a curiosity with living in the backcountry.

If you love adventure and the wilderness, then this book is for you! This is one of the best adventure books that I have ever read. Bonnie Traplin has a way of absorbing you right into the story and making you feel as if you were there. This book also gave me reflections of my own experiences that I had in the wilderness. You will feel every emotion known while reading her story. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a true adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars TAKE A TRIP TO THE YUKON, March 27, 2005
This review is from: ARE WE HAVING FUN YET? (Paperback)
This book is a funny, tragic, heartfelt memoir of a woman's life in the far north. The hardships are hard to believe, but the realistic writing takes the reader to the Yukon Territory, where the author spent so many years as a hunting guide. If you liked The Egg and I, you'll like this book.
