From the Author

I began Liv and Dean's story with the intention of writing an intense, sexy romance about a married couple who are still wildly in love. Liv and Dean adore each other to distraction and have a scorching hot sex life, but their love for each other has concealed dark secrets and undercurrents of pain. What happens when those secrets rise to the surface in ways neither of them expected? And what happens when their illusions about each other are shattered?

Medieval history professor Dean West is brilliant, sexy, strong, and he completely adores his wife. He knows about Carolingian Era politics and medieval poetry as well as baseball stats, foreign films, Russian economics, why Star Trek is better than Star Wars, and how to throw a spiral in football. However, because he is so accomplished, his biggest weakness is his fear of failure, and it's precisely that fear that almost destroys his marriage.

Olivia West is both lovely and complicated. She's determined, practical, and has spent much of her life maintaining the image of a good she's a very willing student when Dean teaches her just how sexy a good relationship can be. Liv has pulled herself out of the darkness of her past and found a safe haven in the arms of her husband, but is now just beginning to realize that she might be lost in the shadow of Dean's brilliance.

In writing this trilogy, Liv and Dean and their struggles have become so real to me. I loved writing the journey of a flawed, passionate couple who will do anything for each other, and I hope their story speaks to the romantic in all of us who believes in acceptance, forgiveness, passion, and love.

This book took me on a journey of how a wonderful marriage can crumble from lack of communication, misunderstandings, insecurities, and jealousy. How two people who love each other so very much can end up with such a gap between them when one of the people are being dishonest.
"Arouse", is a story about the marriage between Dean and Liv West and how two people who are so devoted to one another can drift apart from misunderstandings and dishonesty. Everything is going great in their lives up until Liv gets fired from her job and then life becomes very conflicting for her. She gets into a rut and slowly her smooth sailing marriage starts to develop some waves. Dean is a professor for the Medieval Studies program, and not only is he an extremely intelligent man but quite the hottie as well. There are plenty of students of the "female" variety that try to coax some "study" time out of their studly professor. He only ever has eyes for his wife though, and he is a supportive hubby on top of that devotion as well. Slowly though situations begin to happen and doubts are being formed in the marriage. Instead of Dean or Liv confronting certain fears that each one has, they begin to stop communication and resentment becomes deeper and deeper. So much happens throughout the story, and the couple tries at times to smooth things out, to have their foundation crash down again. Will they be able to rise above the indifference and become close again?
Nina Lane has written an intense emotional journey through this couples marriage. I was hooked from the first page, all of the way to the end. I became so absorbed in this story that I felt as if I was the one going through the angst and heartache that Dean and Liv were living through.

What happens to the perfect couple when she finds out that he didn't share all the details of his life before he met her? Olivia has not had an easy life, until she meets Dean, a hot, hot, hot history professor. Yes, this is a Nina Lane book, so yes, there is plenty of hot, steamy sex, but there is so much more here too. Olivia and Dean both have insecurities, just like real live couples do. In the five years they have been together, they have become each other's world. What happens when the real world catches up to them? Can they trust each other enough to work through the problems they encounter?
Nina wrote this in chapters telling Olivia and Dean's story from their view, so you get a balanced, poignant, emotional journey with this read. I am adding Nina to my list of must read authors, she has yet to disappoint me with any of her books.

I haven't read anything by Nina Lane before but was intrigued by the blurb. I don't see too many "sexy" stories about married couples, so was curious how this would translate to a steamy romance book. Well, it definitely translated for me and I couldn't stop reading within the first few pages. I wanted to know more about Dean and Olivia, their past, how they got together, and ultimately where they were going in the future. I like that there were some flashbacks about their early relationship as I genuinely wanted to see what had taken place and gotten them to the point they were at currently. I really liked Dean a lot and could see how Liv was pretty crazy about him-warm personality, hot, successful, a professor, dependable and intense to be around-what's not to love? Sigh.

But there are some cracks just underneath the surface of their, until now, blissful marriage and they start to show up one night when neither of them expect it. They begin to pull apart gradually and neither Dean nor Olivia know exactly how to fix this strange new awkwardness between them. Because while Olivia has a dark past, she has shared all of that with her husband-but he has kept a big secret from her that will rock their marriage and all the trust she has placed in him for over five years. She starts to wonder how well she actually knows this man who has become the everything in her world, and what else he might be keeping from her? They both make some poor choices, handle things badly, and then have to deal with the fall out. But what happens when you no longer have the trust you once never would have questioned? Is there a way to get that back and move beyond hurt, or is even the passionate, all consuming, love between them not enough to repair the damage?

Arouse is the first book in the Spiral of Bliss series. Every book in this series has pretty high overall ratings, every one of them with an average of more than 4 stars. I really went back and forth with myself about what to rate this one but I finally decided on 3.

Overall, the book was technically good. The writing was good, the dialogue was good, and the way that Ms. Lane is able to tap into very real emotions over Dean and Liv’s turmoil is good. On one hand, it was nice to read something different, because the couple is already married, but on the other hand I really missed the experience of watching two people meet and fall in love. You get a little taste of it in flashbacks, but part of the newness of a relationship is what I love in my romance novels.

I can normally devour a book in a day or two, sometimes if life gets busy it takes me three or four. But I struggled at times to get through this one. It took me five days, and there were times I really wanted to give up, especially in the beginning because I felt like I was watching a reality show about a boring married couple. For a while, nothing really happened to draw me in.

I was really torn on how I felt about Dean, too. While he was hot all of the time, he was kind of jerk some of the time. He could be very sweet and I’d like him, and then he would say something to Liv that was so demeaning that I wanted to stop reading. Even before they started having marital issues.

The last 20% or so of the book it really picked up for me, but then I was left with a huge cliffhanger. I’m torn on how to feel about this too! Normally, I kind of like cliffhangers, so long as I don’t have to wait a year to find out what happens. So it’s even better if the book is already out.
