5.0 out of 5 stars VERY INFORMATIVE
This book answered all my question about PSK31 which is why I bought it. In fact it covered other ways to use my radio and computer that I did not know about. Very easy reading.

2.0 out of 5 stars Digital Handbook review
I was very disappointed with this book. For someone that has never seen any of the digital modes working it may be good for a read but I have used several of the listed modes and was not impressed with the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good entry level information, May 16, 2010

This review is from: ARRL's HF Digital Handbook (Paperback)
This book provides a good overview of digital communcation protocols used by amateurs over HF. Due to the development of the part of amateur radio the reference section (ca 2007) is not worth much but a quick search on the internet would provide 'n updated list. Good introduction if your are new to this.

Although some have complained that this book has little to offer grizzled veterans of digital operations on the HF bands, it is an excellent primer on:

1.) what's available,
2.) what each method can and can't do, and
3.) the requirements for operating each.

This is a "handbook" in the sense of "a guide" or "a quick reference." It is not an encyclopedia, like ARRL's "Handbook of Radio Communications" or CRC's "Handbook of Chemistry and Physics," neither of which, ironically, can really be held in the hand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, July 9, 2011

This review is from: ARRL's HF Digital Handbook (Paperback)
I was wanting to get a start into digital modes of ham radio after being out of it for a number of years. This book helped me get started again. It has a brief history of digital modes, describing the post WW2 technology transformations that took the ham community from simple radio teletype, through all the modes that grew because of the personal computer revolution with sound cards, to software driven evolutions continuing through today. The technology is changing all the time. Describes RTTY, Psk31, Pactor I & II & III, WinLink 2000, Clover, Hellschreiber, Mfsk, G-tor, Mt-63, Throb, Olivia, and DominoEX. Talks about contesting. Until I read this book, I didn't realize that with certain transceivers you already have what you need to operate some of the digital modes without a stand-alone TNC - terminal node controller. The ARRL always has well written books on any Ham Radio subject, and this one is no different. I had an earlier edition from 1999, but this one was upgraded with all sorts of new material. Worth the price
