In general, these are the best tool ever. I was impressed by the low price on this one, but, as usual, you get what you pay for. The fit of the blade to the handle is poor. Find a better one elsewhere, because a hori hori IS indispensable. Cuts through roots, stays sharp, doesn't rust. Works in any soil---rocky, clay, if you have difficult soil, you want this tool. I've given lots of these as gifts to fellow gardeners and they all rave about it and wonder how they lived without it. They work great for digging potty holes when backpacking, too. (Heavier that the plastic spades, but worth the weight.) If you leave your tools laying around, you may want to spray-paint the handle a bright color.

I read all the reviews I could on these Hori Hori knives! I have been using mind to dig into rocky clay to extract crab grass. I can not believe how sturdy these knives are. I was striking the ground with full swings and hitting hard pan and rocks! The knife did not care! The sheath is CHEAP. The serration on the knife cuts through tree limbs and roots. The curve is good for fertilizer, and dirt scooping. With a good 1" bye pass pruner, and this tool you can get most things done to maintain your beds and boarders.

The tool works like any other Hori Hori, but the workmanship on the handle is very poor. The wood was crushed by the rivets and the resulting splintered wood wasn't trimmed and smoothed, so the handle had splinters sticking out. The clear coat on the handle was over applied and ran. The finish coat dried in big blobs making the handle rougher still. I've bought better quality ones for about the same money.

Japanese Weeding Tool,

A very useful tool for getting to the 'root' of the problem. If you are having trouble deciding between stainless steel and carbon steel go with the carbon option. I got the stainless version and still expect to get much use [many years] from it even though I bent it while weeding near a concrete walkway.
Don't be surprised how much this looks like a hunting or survival knife :) With some practice you'll soon be scoring roots 6" and longer.

The ARS KNKDA1S Hori Hori Knife is labeled as Growtech with no ARS on the label but it's exactly the same tool. After investigating Hori Hori knives, I decided to purchase this one from Amazon despite the several negative reviews which claimed it was of a poor quality. My experience has been that it is just as pictured, arrived in the cheap vinyl sheath as pictured, and it is an excellent tool which I highly recommend. Mine is comfortable to hold and has no splinters or splits in the wood. The finish is even, clean and without a flaw. The stainless steel blade is also clean, well marked, has a blade with one serrated edge and sharp edge. The concave shape allows for digging, hence the Japanese "dig dig" name. It was made in Japan. This is an incredible tool which has quickly and unexpectedly replaced most of my other hand tools. For example, in my garden plot today, it is the only tool I used to remove nasty thick weeds, break up clumps of soil, dig a hole for planting, cutting off squash, parsley, chives, and smashing a crawling bug. I was prepared to pay twice as much as this knife for another brand but am sure glad I took a chance with this one!

This is the garden tool that does everything. It digs, it chop, it slices. I now basically only have to take it with me when I garden.

I have now bought two of these; one as a present. I am using mine for technical soils science work (mapping soil profiles). I find this tool very easy to dig through soil with and it seems well made. It has a serrated edge that I haven't yet utilized. Other factors I liked were the price and that it ships w/Amazon Prime.
