Book Description

September 1, 2006 ART as 1 series (Book 1)
This directory of 43 up-and-coming artists from Japan is a “look-book of contemporary artwork. While focusing primarily on illustrators, the guide also represents work from the worlds of photography, sculpture, and painting. In addition to providing American creative professionals with a source of information on Japanese talent, —full color images of their work, brief biographies, contact information, listings of awards received, clients, and shows in which their work has appeared, the directory also serves as a window into the latest trends in the Japanese illustration world. A convenient key (A=Acrylics, D=Digital, O=Oils) assists in the understanding of the mediums in which each artist specializes. Among the artists featured are Takashi Akiyama, Hitoshi Miura, Tsuyoshi Nagano, Takashi Sekiguchi, Radical Suzuki, and Hiroshi Watanabe.

Editorial Reviews

Review

ART as 1® - Japanese Professional Illustrators will serve as a great resource to American advertising and design professionals looking for a talent in Japan especially for projects that are more geared towards the eastern market. I am confident that this book will be a great and helpful guide to the American illustrators and designers to find out more, at one place, about what are the trends in the Japanese illustration world. All the time we are exposed to the different cultural influences but in today's global market place it is a must that we all get a chance to also see good selection of quality work as much as possible. My hope is that with ART as 1 Japanese Professional Illustrators we will see more of the great talent exchange between the two countries. --Vesna Petropic, founder & partner at Picnic Design Studios, founder of three de3isgn studio, board member, American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) Cross Cultural Design Group

At Giant Robot, we have been supporters of the ART as 1® online art journal since its beginning. ... Of course we were thrilled to find out about the ARTas1® book, which provides a well-chosen sampling of exciting and up-and-coming artists from Japan. The classy publication features an amazing selection of character design, 2-D comics, digital rendering, editorial illustration, and other styles, and is an excellent source of reference and inspiration. --Martin Wong & Eric Nakamura, founders Giant Robot magazine, retail stores, and restaurant

Today's American graphic design market is big, bold, growing and visually hungry for new ideas, influences and talent. The art of ARTas1® book fulfills a need for fresh, powerful and colorful imagery. I believe the talent shown within will be welcomed by American art buyers, just as I welcome these artists to our community. This is a useful resource. I am particularly pleased that it displays the work of both long-established Japanese artists as well as the new and next generation of talent. --Gordon Kaye, editor, Graphic Design USA

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection of beautiful art!, October 18, 2006
This review is from: ART as 1: Japanese Professional Illustrators Vol. 1 (ARTas1® series) (ART as 1 series) (Paperback)
I ran across "Art as 1" through a colleague. I realize it's somewhere between a catalog of available artists from Japan and a reference book, but I picked it up while I had to wait for something and flipped through it. I don't know what I expected, but this wasn't it. This is absolutely delightful, full of beautiful art, and I was overwhelmed by the variety of styles.

The work of two artists in particular leapt off the page and into my heart. Tsuyoshi Nagano's movie-poster style of work is magnificent, particularly the "Star Wars" illustrations. And Susumu Uchida's paintings of fish and fishermen are breath-taking in detail and style. Wait, make it three artists. I also love Hitoshi Miura's "mechanical whale" sculpture. This isn't the only pure whimsy in the book, but it was my favorite.

I'm not an artist or a commercial graphics person, but it seems as if "Art as 1" should be a standard reference for advertisers and art schools alike. As for me, it's not a reference, it's now a "coffee table" book I share with friends.

I couldn't put the book down and was amazed by the work presented by the 43 artists. Many of the characters brought a smile to my face. I will use this book as a valuable resource for my clients who want something new, fresh, and original on their products.
